Dog kennels at a range of prices

Start choosing a dog kennel by where it will live: in the garden, exposed to rain and wind, or indoors as a cosy resting spot. Then think about your dog’s size, the material and the roof. The range covers both uses, from fabric dog houses for small dogs to large plastic or wooden kennels.

Outdoor dog kennels: plastic, wood or insulated fabric

Outdoors, look for a roof that keeps the rain out and a raised base, off the wet ground:

For wood, the raised wooden kennel with felt roof, in solid pine measuring 85 × 58 × 58 cm, has a sloping roof to keep your dog dry according to its product page. A wooden kennel needs a little upkeep; several synthetic models are described as easy to clean on their product pages.

For a cat or a small pet, models in insulating Oxford fabric take up less space: the insulated all-season kennel, in three sizes, or the waterproof thermal house, which its product page presents as designed to keep out the cold.

Indoor dog houses: a spot of their own in your home

Indoors, the dog house becomes a cosy den where your dog retreats to sleep:

A dog house for summer

When it’s hot, the cooling dog house includes ice packs that its product page says keep the temperature pleasant. Add a cooling mat to slide inside the kennel.

What size dog kennel should you choose?

Measure your dog standing up, from the floor to the top of the head, and from the nose to the base of the tail. The kennel should let them walk in without ducking much, turn around and stretch out fully. Compare these measurements with the dimensions on each product page:

  • Small dog: fabric dog houses, tipis, compact kennels;
  • Medium dog: ventilated kennel, villa kennel, M or L models;
  • Large dog: large outdoor kennel, the 85 cm wooden kennel, or the biggest sizes of the 2-in-1 dog house.

Too big, and an outdoor kennel holds your dog’s warmth less well in winter; too small, and they simply won’t use it.

Where to put the kennel

Place it sheltered from the prevailing wind, with the entrance facing away from the rain, on flat, dry ground. In summer, pick a shady spot. Whether the roof is flat or sloping, keep it clear of leaves and snow so it keeps protecting your companion.

FAQ

Plastic or wood: which dog kennel should you choose?

Plastic, often described as waterproof and easy to clean, works well in the garden; wood looks more natural and needs some upkeep. Both come in raised versions.

Do you need a different kennel for indoors and outdoors?

Usually, yes. Outdoors, it needs to protect against rain and cold; indoors, comfort and size matter more. Some plastic models are listed for both uses on their product page.
