Dog clippers at a range of prices

Fifteen tools for grooming your dog at home: rechargeable electric clippers, small precision trimmers for paws, HIENA professional clippers and kits with a vacuum. Almost all of them work on cats too. To choose, start from your dog's coat and the area to clip: the whole body, or just the paws and muzzle.

Electric dog clippers

For a full-body clip, a rechargeable electric clipper with several cutting lengths is usually enough:

  • the ergonomic electric clipper – lightweight, USB rechargeable, with adjustable guards;
  • the USB rechargeable electric clipper with 4 guards, a steel blade and low noise;
  • the quiet grooming clipper, with 5 speeds and 6 guards, for dogs, cats and rabbits;
  • the quiet rechargeable clipper with a titanium blade, washable;
  • the quiet rechargeable clipper with 4 guards and steel blades, rated for 120 min of battery life.

Professional clippers

For regular clipping, both HIENA clippers have a stainless steel blade and are described as quiet. The HIENA rechargeable professional clipper, with a lithium battery, is sold on its own or in a pack with accessories. The HIENA professional electric clipper, for its part, adds a digital display, in gold or silver.

Clippers for paws and finishing touches

For delicate areas, a small cutting head is easier to handle:

  • the mini precision trimmer, cordless and battery-free according to its product page, for paws and eyes;
  • the precision trimmer for paws and fur, for paws and ears;
  • the compact electric trimmer, for paws, muzzle and ears;
  • the multi-head trimmer and the 4-in-1 grooming kit, with interchangeable heads, for paw pads and nails.

Grooming kits with a vacuum

Vacuum kits suck up the hair as you clip. The multifunction grooming vacuum has 6 attachments, the 2.5 L vacuum includes a clipper, brushes and a comb, and the grooming kit with vacuum combines drying, clipping and vacuuming, with 10 attachments.

Which dog clippers should you choose?

  • Full clip – a rechargeable electric clipper with guards, or a HIENA for regular use.
  • Paws, muzzle, ears – a precision or compact trimmer.
  • Dog scared of noise – a model its product page describes as quiet.
  • Less hair around the house – a kit with a vacuum.
  • Budget dog clippers – the ergonomic clipper or the mini precision trimmer.

How do you clip your dog?

Brush the coat first to remove any knots. Start with the longest guard, in the direction of the hair, then shorten if needed. Hold the skin taut with one hand in thin areas and glide the clipper without pressing. Take breaks, clean the cutting head and check it isn't getting hot. For paw pads, a precision trimmer is enough.

FAQ

What are the best dog clippers?

The ones that match your dog's coat and how you'll use them: a rechargeable electric clipper with guards for the body, a HIENA for regular use, a precision trimmer for finishing touches.

What are the quietest dog clippers?

Several models are described as quiet or low-noise on their product pages, such as the quiet rechargeable clippers and the 4-in-1 kit. A nervous dog gets used to it more easily if you switch the clipper on near them before you start.

Can you clip a dog with knots?

It's better to detangle with a brush first: clippers struggle with a tight knot and pull on the skin. If the coat is badly matted, a groomer can take care of it.

Is it good to clip your dog?

It depends on the coat. Some dogs are clipped regularly, while others, with a double coat, shouldn't be shaved short. Ask a groomer about your dog's breed.
