Cat litter mats: 8 styles at a range of prices

A litter mat goes in front of or under the tray: as your cat steps out, the litter stuck to its paws stays on the mat instead of being tracked all over the house.

Non-slip mats

The simplest option, laid in front of the tray. The non-slip paw print litter mat comes in six colours. Two paw-shaped mats follow, one in fabric and the other in waterproof PVC. The Japanese-style non-slip mat, in PVC, works under the litter tray as well as under food bowls.

Double-layer mats

The waterproof EVA double-layer mat traps litter between its two layers, and its product page says it's easy to clean.

Which cat litter mat should you choose?

• Small tray, little space: a non-slip mat or a double-layer mat in XS or S.
• Litter that scatters: a double-layer mat, size L or larger.
• Large tray or two cats: the large format, up to 60 x 90 cm.
• Raised tray: the platform on legs.

Pick a cat litter mat that's wider than the tray entrance: it needs to catch all four of your cat's paws on the way out.

Everyday care

A quick vacuum or sweep is enough to pick up the litter left on top. Litter trapped in a double-layer mat can then be tipped into the bin.
