Cat litter mat for messy cats

A cat digs, buries, then steps out of the tray with litter between its toes. The granules end up in the hallway, then the living room, and you find yourself vacuuming the same spot every day.

A mat with cells solves this: the granules drop into the hollows on the first step and stay there. What matters is the depth of the cells and how easy it is to empty, and that's how we pick our litter mats.

Cells, edges and material: what holds the granules

This one is made of PVC. Rectangle with colourful Japanese patterns and textured surface, 50 × 35 cm — it should cover the whole exit area of the tray, at least two cat strides deep. A mat that folds in half empties straight into the bin; without that, you end up shaking it outside, which isn't always possible. The non-slip paw-shaped litter mat itself matters too.

  • Cover the whole exit area, two cat strides deep – this mat measures 50 × 35 cm
  • Check how deep the cells are – a flat surface won't hold a single granule
  • Choose a mat that folds so you can empty it straight into the bin
  • Go for a soft material – sensitive paws refuse a rigid cat litter mat
  • Clean it regularly: shake out or vacuum regularly; wash in lukewarm water if needed
  • Empty it twice a week – it fills up faster than you'd think

Where to put it, and how to empty it

It goes on the side your cat steps out, not all round the tray: that's where the granules fall. Emptying it twice a week is enough, but you'll really notice if you skip it – a full mat holds nothing back.

Some cats with sensitive paw pads refuse rigid spiky mats and jump over them, which defeats the point. A soft material goes down much better. And if the mess comes from digging rather than paws, what you need is a litter tray with high sides.

A useful check before you buy: look at where the granules actually come from. If they're scattered all round the tray, it's the digging, and a mat won't change a thing – you need high sides. If they form a trail heading towards the hallway, it's the paws, and a mat sorts it out completely.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

What is it made of?

PVC. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.
