Long line dog leads at a range of prices

A long line dog lead is a long lead – from 1.2 m to 25 m in this selection – that lets your four-legged friend explore while staying attached to you. It's mainly used for training and recall work, where a short lead restricts movement too much. To choose well, start from how you'll use it: recall training, woodland walks, the beach, or tethering in the garden.

Flat, lightweight webbing to get started

Light, flat webbing in polyamide or nylon is still the simplest choice for starting training:

Models that stay visible when the light fades

For early-morning or evening walks, several product pages list reflective webbing:

PVC for water and mud

These PVC models are described as waterproof on their product pages – handy after a trip to the beach or a walk across a wet field:

  • the PVC model from 5 to 20 m, rated for 350 kg of pull;
  • the reinforced PVC model, from 5 to 20 m, designed for medium to large dogs;
  • the PVC training model, from 3 m to 15 m, in five colours;
  • the PVC lead in 3, 6 or 9 m, rated for 270 kg of pull.

Heavy-duty models for large dogs and the garden

Which length should I choose?

The right length depends on the terrain and your dog's level of training:

  • Town, puppies, first exercises: 3 to 5 m, easier to handle for small dogs.
  • Recall in open ground: about 10 m, to give distance without losing control.
  • Wide open spaces, beach, woodland: 15 or 20 m.

A long line gives your dog distance, but the longer it gets, the more practice you need to gather it up without tangles: start short, then go longer once recall is reliable. A 5m long line dog lead is often enough for the first sessions.

Using a long line dog lead safely

Ideally attach it to a harness: it gives a better hold than a collar if your dog stops suddenly at the end of the line. Take a look at our selection to find a dog harness for walks. Hold the handle in your hand, never wrap it around your wrist or fingers, and let the rest trail on the ground in open areas. For your safety and your dog's, check the stitching and clip before every outing.

FAQ

What's the difference between a long line and a dog lead?

A lead is usually 1 to 3 m long and is used for walking to heel. A long line dog lead is usually over 5 m: it lets your dog move away while you work on recall. In town, a classic dog lead is still more practical; the rope lead with double handle, from 1.5 m to 3 m, bridges the gap between the two.

Which strong long line dog lead is best for large dogs?

Check the pull rating on the product page and the material: reinforced PVC, thick polyester or steel cope better with a dog that pulls. Add a padded handle to your checklist too: it makes the lead more comfortable in your hand on long walks.
