20m long line: recall at long distance

A long line is the recall tool. It gives your dog enough freedom to wander off and come back, while keeping a physical link: you never reward a failed recall, and your dog never gets into the habit of not coming back.

Five metres is the training length: enough to give them room, short enough to stay manageable on a walk. It's the most popular size among our 20m long lines.

Material, weight and clip: what to check

This one is made of braided polyamide with zinc alloy snap hook. Flat lead with padded loop handle and swivel hook, lengths available: 1.5 m to 20 m — flat webbing doesn't tangle and slides through your hand without rope burn, unlike round rope. Check the snap hook: it's the only part that really breaks. Clip it to a harness, never to a collar. Compared with a waterproof long line for dogs - 5M - 10M - 15M - 20M, it has no mechanism that can fail.

Open ground only, and here's why

The right method is to let it trail on the ground and only pick it up when needed: your dog forgets it's attached, and you can still stop them. Call, reward, release — and never call them back just to end the walk.

Never wrap it around your hand: a sudden lunge causes rope burns and broken fingers. In open spaces and with a reliable dog, a retractable dog lead gives even more freedom.

The mistake that ruins recall: calling your dog only to clip the lead back on and head home. Within a few weeks, they learn that coming back ends the walk. Call them ten times for a treat and a release, and only once to go home.

Will the clip hold a large dog?

Check the stated load in the specifications rather than the look: a zamak clip gives way where a steel one holds. It's the part that fails first on a dog lead.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 1.5M, 3M, 5M, 10M, 15M and 20M. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

How do I clean it?

Warm soapy water, then air dry. Avoid the washing machine: it damages the stitching on the handle, which takes the most strain.
