Breakaway cat collars at a range of prices

9 cat collars, from embroidered charm designs to velvet collars with a bow tie. Most have a bell, and their product pages state a breakaway buckle or a safety buckle. To choose, start with your cat's neck size, then think about style and use.

What is a breakaway collar?

A standard collar closes with a fixed buckle. A breakaway collar closes with a safety buckle, or breakaway buckle depending on the product page. Check what each page says about the buckle, and always adjust the size: a collar that's too loose gets caught more easily.

Cotton, nylon and polyester collars

For a first breakaway cat collar that's easy to wear every day:

Velvet and bow-tie collars

For a cat that mostly stays indoors, or for photos, several collars play on elegance:

  • the adjustable collar with bow tie and gold bell, in Terylene, with a breakaway buckle, in plain, floral or leopard print;
  • the velvet collar with bow tie, in size S (16-26 cm) or L (20-32 cm);
  • the corduroy velvet collar with bow tie and gold bell, also in S or L.

On these three models, the bow tie is optional: every colour comes with or without.

Breakaway collar with AirTag

To keep track of a cat that likes to roam, the reflective collar with AirTag holder, in soft nylon, holds the tracker in a built-in pocket and closes with a breakaway buckle.

How do you choose a breakaway cat collar?

  • Outdoor cat: a light nylon or polyester collar with a safety buckle.
  • Indoor cat: velvet or a bow tie, for style.
  • Cat that wanders off: the collar with AirTag holder, reflective at night.
  • Kitten or small neck: size S in the velvet collars, or an adjustable model.

Getting the size right

Measure your cat's neck with a soft tape measure, then check the sizes given on the product page. Once the collar is on, two fingers should fit between collar and neck: not too tight, for comfort, and not too loose, so it can't get a paw through it. Check the fit from time to time, especially on a growing kitten.

FAQ

What's the best breakaway cat collar?

The one that's the right size and whose product page states a safety buckle. For an outdoor cat, a light model; for a cat that wanders off, the collar with AirTag holder.

Can you personalise a breakaway cat collar?

You can attach a cat ID tag engraved with its name, as long as it stays light. For other designs, see our selection of personalised cat collars.

Should a cat wear a collar all the time?

That's your call, depending on how often it goes out. A well-fitted collar can be worn every day, but take it off if it bothers your cat and check its neck regularly.
