The litter stays in the tray — edges and mat catch what he carries out on his paws

He goes inside it, not next to it — big enough for him to turn and dig without hitting an edge

The smell doesn't spread through the room — high sides and a closure that hold back splashes and dust

Waterproof, non-toxic EVA foam — product material

Cat litter mat for messy cats

A cat digs, buries, then steps out of the tray with litter between its toes. The granules end up in the hallway, then the living room, and you find yourself vacuuming the same spot every day.

A mat with cells solves this: the granules drop into the hollows on the first step and stay there. What matters is the depth of the cells and how easy it is to empty, and that's how we pick our litter mats.

Cells, edges and material: what holds the granules

This one is made of waterproof, non-toxic EVA foam. Rectangular double-layer honeycomb mat, 60 x 45 cm (depending on model) – it should cover the whole area where the cat steps out of the tray, over at least two strides. A mat that folds in half empties straight into the bin; without that detail you end up shaking it outside, which isn't always possible. The non-slip Japanese-style cat litter mat itself matters too.

  • Cover the whole exit area over two cat strides – this mat measures 60 x 45 cm (depending on model)
  • Check how deep the cells are – a flat surface won't hold a single granule
  • Choose a mat that folds so you can empty it straight into the bin
  • Go for a soft material – sensitive paws refuse a rigid cat litter mat
  • Clean it regularly: easy to wash with water, quick-drying
  • Empty it twice a week – it fills up faster than you'd think

Where to put it, and how to empty it

It goes on the side your cat steps out, not all round the tray: that's where the granules fall. Emptying it twice a week is enough, but you'll really notice if you skip it – a full mat holds nothing back.

Some cats with sensitive paw pads refuse rigid spiky mats and jump over them, which defeats the point. A soft material goes down much better. And if the mess comes from digging rather than paws, what you need is a cat litter tray with high sides.

A useful check before you buy: look at where the granules actually come from. If they're scattered all round the tray, it's the digging, and a mat won't change a thing – you need high sides. If they form a trail heading towards the hallway, it's the paws, and a mat sorts it out completely.

FAQ

Where exactly should I put it?

Right in front of the litter tray exit, sticking out about thirty centimetres: your cat needs to take two or three steps on it for the cells to empty. Pushed up against the tray, it does almost nothing.

What are the exact dimensions?

60 x 45 cm (depending on model). That's the measurement to check against your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows straight away in use.

How do I clean it?

Fold it in half and pour the granules back into the tray — that's the point of the double layer. A wash in warm soapy water once a week is then all it needs.

What is it made of?

Waterproof, non-toxic EVA foam. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
