He goes inside it, not next to it — big enough for him to turn and dig without hitting an edge

The smell doesn't spread through the room — high sides and a closure that hold back splashes and dust

Cleaning takes two minutes — smooth walls: litter doesn't stick in the corners

Cat litter mat for messy cats

A cat digs, buries, then steps out of the tray with litter between its toes. The granules end up in the hallway, then the living room, and you find yourself vacuuming the same spot every day.

A mat with cells solves this: the granules drop into the hollows on the first step and stay there. What matters is the depth of the cells and how easy it is to empty, and that's how we pick our litter mats.

Cells, edges and material: what holds the granules

This one is made of waterproof EVA. Rectangular, double-layer honeycomb structure, several sizes available — it should cover the whole exit area of the tray, at least two cat strides deep. A mat that folds in half empties straight into the bin; without that, you end up shaking it outside, which isn't always possible. The non-slip paw-shaped litter mat itself matters too.

  • Cover the whole exit area, two cat strides deep – this mat comes in several sizes
  • Check how deep the cells are – a flat surface won't hold a single granule
  • Choose a mat that folds so you can empty it straight into the bin
  • Go for a soft material – sensitive paws refuse a rigid cat litter mat
  • Clean it regularly: open and empty out the residue, rinse with clean water; dries quickly
  • Empty it twice a week – it fills up faster than you'd think

Where to put it, and how to empty it

It goes on the side your cat steps out, not all round the tray: that's where the granules fall. Emptying it twice a week is enough, but you'll really notice if you skip it – a full mat holds nothing back.

Some cats with sensitive paw pads refuse rigid spiky mats and jump over them, which defeats the point. A soft material goes down much better. And if the mess comes from digging rather than paws, what you need is a litter tray with high sides.

A useful check before you buy: look at where the granules actually come from. If they're scattered all round the tray, it's the digging, and a mat won't change a thing – you need high sides. If they form a trail heading towards the hallway, it's the paws, and a mat sorts it out completely.

FAQ

What is a litter mat for?

It catches the granules your cat carries out of the litter tray on its paws. Without one, litter ends up all along the hallway within days.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in XS (30x30cm), S (30x45cm), M (40x50cm), L (45x60cm), XL (55x75cm) and XXL (60x90cm). Measure the spot you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Where exactly should I put it?

Right in front of the litter tray exit, sticking out about thirty centimetres: your cat needs to take two or three steps on it for the cells to empty. Pushed up against the tray, it does almost nothing.

What is it made of?

Waterproof EVA. This composition determines the care: check the specifications for the right washing method.
