Outdoor dog kennel in laminated wood fibreboard. A raised floor and insulation matter most: direct contact with the ground draws up damp, and a kennel that's too big never warms up.

Outdoor dog kennel: insulation and a raised floor come first

An outdoor kennel isn't a decorative shed: it has to keep your dog dry, out of the wind and, above all, off direct contact with the ground. A floor sitting straight on the earth draws up damp constantly, and your dog sleeps in the cold however thick the walls are.

So a raised floor and insulation are the two real criteria, well ahead of looks. That's what we check in our outdoor kennels.

Roof, floor and size: the three things that matter

This one is made of laminated wood fibreboard. Small house with a pitched roof, 40 × 40 × 45 cm — the kennel should be just big enough for your dog to turn around and lie down, no more: too much space never warms up with body heat alone. Check the roof pitch and the overhang above the entrance. At night, a indoor dog house indoors is still the better choice in a harsh winter, as is a raised pet house – cooling and waterproof.

  • Check the floor is raised — direct contact with the ground draws up damp
  • Choose one just big enough to turn around in — this model measures 40 × 40 × 45 cm
  • Face the entrance away from the prevailing wind and never due north
  • Check the roof overhang above the entrance, or the rain gets in
  • Line it with straw rather than blankets, which soak up damp and freeze
  • Look after the wood: dry clean with a soft cloth, avoid prolonged damp

Where to position it, and what to put inside

The entrance should face away from the prevailing wind, never north, and ideally sit under cover or against a wall. A simple tarp curtain over the entrance makes a huge difference to the temperature inside.

Line it with straw, which insulates and doesn't hold damp, rather than blankets that freeze once wet. And in a hard frost or a heatwave, bring your dog inside: a Dog house indoors is the only real protection.

A simple test to judge insulation: slide your hand across the floor inside in the morning after a cold night. If the floor feels cold to the touch, it's just as cold for your dog lying on it for eight hours. An insulating board and a bed of straw fix that for next to nothing.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?

Your pet should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down fully inside. Bigger isn't better: too much space won't warm up from body heat alone.

How do I care for it?

A thorough clean once a month, with the bedding taken out and washed every two weeks. It's trapped damp that does the damage, not the cold.

Will my pet actually use it?

Place it out of the wind and away from foot traffic, and put in a cloth that carries their scent. A kennel exposed to the wind stays empty.

Is it suitable for outdoor use all year round?

Check the specifications for waterproofing and insulation. An indoor kennel left outside takes on damp and becomes unusable within a season.
