Description
Outdoor cat house in 600D Oxford fabric, PE hollow board and insulating composites. The cold comes up through the floor far more than through the walls: it needs to be raised, insulated and just big enough for your cat to warm it with its own body heat.

Outdoor cat house: insulating from the cold and the ground

A cat that lives outdoors or spends its days in the garden needs a dry shelter, out of the wind and off the ground. The cold almost never comes through the walls but through the floor: sitting straight on the earth, it draws heat away all night.

So a good house is raised, insulated and just big enough for the cat to warm it alone. That's what sets apart our cat houses for outdoors.

Raised floor, roof and entrance: the three things that matter

This one is made of 600D Oxford fabric, PE hollow board and insulating composites. Rectangular house with a sheltered front opening, 45 × 50 × 50 cm — too much space never warms up with your cat's body heat alone, and that's the most common mistake. Check the roof overhang above the entrance and whether it has feet. A insulated 4-season dog and cat house with a more rustic finish works too, as long as the floor is raised off the ground.

  • Check the floor is raised — direct contact with the ground draws heat away all night
  • Choose one just big enough to turn around in — this model measures 45 × 50 × 50 cm
  • Face the entrance away from the prevailing wind, never due north
  • Line it with straw, which insulates and doesn't freeze, rather than blankets
  • Check the roof overhang — without it, rain gets in through the opening
  • Look after the wood: dry or sponge clean, quick tool-free assembly

Where to set it up, and what to put inside

Against a wall, under cover if possible, with the entrance facing away from the prevailing wind: that's the placement that works. A tarp curtain over the entrance gains you several degrees for next to nothing.

Line it with straw rather than fabric: a wet blanket freezes and makes it colder. And if your cat comes in at night, a outdoor kennels with a simpler design is plenty for the daytime.

One behaviour point to respect: a cat won't readily go into a shelter with only one way out if it knows other cats are prowling around. A second opening, even a small one, completely changes how much an outdoor house gets used in a busy neighbourhood.

FAQ

Is it suitable for outdoor use all year round?

Check the specifications for waterproofing and insulation. An indoor kennel left outside takes on damp and becomes unusable within a season.

Which size should I choose?

Your pet should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down fully inside. Bigger isn't better: too much space won't warm up from body heat alone.

How do I care for it?

A thorough clean once a month, with the bedding taken out and washed every two weeks. It's trapped damp that does the damage, not the cold.

Will my pet actually use it?

Place it out of the wind and away from foot traffic, and put in a cloth that carries their scent. A kennel exposed to the wind stays empty.
