A cat that lives outdoors or spends its days in the garden needs a dry shelter, out of the wind and off the ground. The cold almost never comes through the walls but through the floor: sitting straight on the earth, it draws heat away all night.

Raised floor, roof and entrance: the three things that matter

This one is made of waterproof, hard-wearing nylon, ideal for long-term outdoor use. Cabin-style house with a sloping roof and front opening, available in several sizes — too much space never warms up with your cat's body heat alone, and that's the most common mistake. Check the roof overhang above the entrance and whether it has feet. A small waterproof house for cats and small dogs with a more rustic finish works too, as long as the floor is raised off the ground.

  • Face the entrance away from the prevailing wind, never due north

Where to set it up, and what to put inside

Against a wall, under cover if possible, with the entrance facing away from the prevailing wind: that's the placement that works. A tarp curtain over the entrance gains you several degrees for next to nothing.

Line it with straw rather than fabric: a wet blanket freezes and makes it colder. And if your cat comes in at night, a outdoor kennels with a simpler design is plenty for the daytime.

One behaviour point to respect: a cat won't readily go into a shelter with only one way out if it knows other cats are prowling around. A second opening, even a small one, completely changes how much an outdoor house gets used in a busy neighbourhood.

Does it get in the way when he does his business?

Our models are cut away at the back. If your dog is male, check this in the photos: a cut-out that's too short is the classic flaw.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S (45x35x34cm), M (48x42x36cm) and L (53x46x38cm). Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, go for the larger one.

Is it machine washable?

At 30 °C, inside out, no tumble dryer: heat lifts the waterproof coatings. Hang it up to dry.
