He can't shift it by pushing — the panels lock together: a puppy pushes, but can't knock it over

It folds away flat — folded against a wall instead of taking over the living room

He has space without being shut in a crate — several panels cover the floor of a small room

Outdoor cat house in hard-wearing Oxford fabric. The cold comes up through the floor far more than through the walls: it needs to be raised, insulated and just big enough for your cat to warm it with its own body heat.

Outdoor cat house: raised floor and insulation

A cat that lives outdoors or spends its days in the garden needs a dry shelter, out of the wind and off the ground. The cold almost never comes through the walls but through the floor: sitting straight on the earth, it draws heat away all night.

So a good house is raised, insulated and just big enough for the cat to warm it alone. That's what sets apart our outdoor cat houses.

Roof, entrance and size: the three things that matter

This one is made of hard-wearing Oxford fabric. Octagonal frame with mesh windows and a removable roof, available in several sizes — too much space never warms up with your cat's body heat alone, and that's the most common mistake. Check the roof overhang above the entrance and whether it has feet. A medium ventilated house for small dogs or cats with a more rustic finish works too, as long as the floor is raised off the ground.

  • Check the floor is raised — direct contact with the ground draws heat away all night
  • Choose one just big enough to turn around in — this model comes in several sizes
  • Face the entrance away from the prevailing wind, never due north
  • Line it with straw, which insulates and doesn't freeze, rather than blankets
  • Check the roof overhang — without it, rain gets in through the opening
  • Look after the wood: hand wash, air dry

Where to position it, and what to put inside

Against a wall, under cover if possible, with the entrance facing away from the prevailing wind: that's the placement that works. A tarp curtain over the entrance gains you several degrees for next to nothing.

Line it with straw rather than fabric: a wet blanket freezes and makes it colder. And if your cat comes in at night, a Indoor dog house with a simpler design is plenty for the daytime.

One behaviour point to respect: a cat won't readily go into a shelter with only one way out if it knows other cats are prowling around. A second opening, even a small one, completely changes how much an outdoor house gets used in a busy neighbourhood.

FAQ

Does it stay up without drilling into the wall?

Pressure-fit models hold in a straight doorway, between two flat surfaces. On stairs or with a dog that pushes, you need a screw fitting: a pressure-fit gate isn't designed to hold back a determined dog.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (73x73x43cm), L (91x91x58cm) and XL (122x122x60cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it suitable for a puppy?

Above all, check the gap between the bars: a puppy can fit its head where an adult can't get through at all, and it's the main cause of accidents with this kind of product.

What is it made of?

Tough Oxford fabric. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
