He goes in by himself — a wide enough opening: one that's too narrow stays empty for months

He sleeps warm with nothing on his back — an enclosed space holds its own warmth: that's how a burrow works

A place nobody follows them — a single entrance is enough to feel out of reach

Indoor dog house for dogs who want a spot of their own

A dog needs a space closed on three sides to truly relax. It's a den instinct: out in the open in the middle of the living room, they keep one ear open and never sleep deeply. An indoor dog house gives them that refuge without shutting them out of the room.

It's also a retreat when the house gets busy — guests, children, the hoover. A dog with a place of their own copes far better with those moments. Choosing comes down to size and opening, and that's what sets apart our indoor dog houses.

Material, opening and washing: what matters day to day

This one is made of waterproof Oxford fabric and breathable mesh. Rectangular foldable playpen, available in several sizes (see size guide) — the rule is simple: your dog must be able to turn around inside and lie stretched out on its side. Too big and it loses its reassuring effect; too small and your dog will sleep next to it. Also check the base comes out for washing. If your dog prefers to sleep flat and cool, a cosy chalet-style house for cats and small dogs will suit them better.

  • Measure your dog lying on its side — this house comes in several sizes (see size guide)
  • Put it against a wall and out of the way, never in the middle of the room
  • Check the base cushion comes out: hand wash or wipe with a damp cloth – hard-wearing fabric
  • Let them go in on their own — a dog house you push a dog into stays empty
  • Put an item of clothing that smells of you inside for the first few days
  • Keep it accessible at all times — an indoor dog house shut at night loses its role as a refuge

Where to put it so they actually use it

Placement decides whether it's adopted. Against a wall, in a corner, within reach of the room where you spend your time but out of the way: that's the triangle that works. A dog house in an empty room stays empty, however comfortable it is.

Never use it as a punishment — a refuge you're sent to by force stops being a refuge. And for an older dog who struggles to step over a ledge, a flat, thick mattress is often a better fit than an enclosed dog house.

A sign that never lies: if your dog lies down inside with their back to the opening, they feel safe there. If they stay facing the room, or lie on the threshold, the dog house is in the wrong place — not the wrong choice.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

A thorough clean once a month, with the bedding taken out and washed every two weeks. It's trapped damp that does the damage, not the cold.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M, L, XL and XXL. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Will my pet actually use it?

Place it out of the wind and away from foot traffic, and put in a cloth that carries their scent. A kennel exposed to the wind stays empty.

Is it suitable for outdoor use all year round?

Check the specifications for waterproofing and insulation. An indoor kennel left outside takes on damp and becomes unusable within a season.
