Dog training collars at a range of prices

A training collar supports your dog's training on walks: it helps with loose-lead walking, recall or barking. The selection brings together ten products: choke collars in steel, rope or polyester, a vibration training collar with remote, an anti-bark collar and two muzzles. The right training collar depends on your dog's size and what you want to teach it.

Choke collars for lead training

A choke collar tightens when the dog pulls, then loosens as soon as it comes back beside you. It's the most common training collar for teaching loose-lead walking. The selection includes six:

  • the double-twist stainless steel choke collar, from XS (40 cm) to XXL (65 cm), with double-twist links that slide freely;
  • the double-twist choke collar 'for behavioural training', in the same six sizes;
  • the steel choke collar with removable links, in S (45 cm), M (50 cm) or L (60 cm): remove links to adjust it;
  • the steel-link choke collar with safety buckle, in 25 cm, for small dogs;
  • the braided rope choke collar, in adjustable nylon, with a safety stop, from XS to XXL;
  • the no-pull polyester choke collar with stainless steel chain, in M (32-48 cm) or L (47-72 cm), in brown, blue or green, which its product page recommends for strong dogs or escape artists.

Vibration training collar with remote

The Vibration Training Collar with Remote offers three training modes: beep, low vibration or strong vibration. It's rechargeable, in adjustable nylon, with an LED light to spot your dog in the evening. It comes as a pack of one collar and one remote, or two collars and one remote to train two dogs single-handedly. It's the go-to tool for distance work, such as recall.

Anti-bark collar

The Automatic Anti-Bark Collar with Smart Sensor, in adjustable black nylon, detects barking and, according to its description, automatically emits a sound signal or a vibration. It works without a remote. Find more models in our Anti-bark collars for dogs section and across the full range: anti-bark dog collar.

Training muzzles

Two muzzles round off the selection. The adjustable nylon training muzzle comes in M, L and XL. The comfort adjustable muzzle and collar, in orange, blue or red, from S to XL, is presented on its product page as a way to prevent bites, barking and scavenging.

Which training collar should you choose?

  • Dog that pulls on the lead: a choke collar, in steel for a strong dog, in rope or polyester for a softer contact.
  • Small dog: the 25 cm choke collar with safety buckle, or the XS size of the double-twist collars.
  • Recall and distance exercises: the vibration training collar with remote.
  • Two dogs: the pack of two collars with one remote.
  • Barking when you're out: the automatic anti-bark collar.
  • Dog that picks everything up on walks: an adjustable muzzle.

For sizing, measure your dog's neck with a soft tape measure and compare it with the length shown on each product page. A well-chosen choke collar is only a few centimetres longer than the neck: too long, it hangs down and doesn't release properly.

Using a training collar properly

A training collar doesn't replace training: it's there to signal to your dog, at the right moment, what you expect from it. Reward it as soon as it gets it right, with your voice or a treat. Never leave a choke collar on an unsupervised dog, or use it to tie the dog up outside walks. Remove the vibration collar after each session and recharge it before the next.

FAQ

How do you use a training collar?

Fit it, then start with short sessions somewhere calm. With a choke collar, a brief tension on the lead is enough, released as soon as the dog returns to heel. With the remote collar, start with the beep and pair it with a command your dog already knows before moving on to vibration.

From what age can a dog wear a training collar?

The product pages in this selection don't state a minimum age. A puppy first learns with a plain collar, a lead and rewards; for a young dog, ask a dog trainer for advice before moving on to a training collar.

Which training collar for a dog that pulls?

A choke collar, or a no-pull collar such as the polyester model with stainless steel chain. A harness that limits pulling is another option for lead walking.
