Description
Check chain collar for dogs in stainless steel links + nylon strap + ABS plastic for the clasp. A training tool: it tightens when pulled and loosens as soon as the pulling stops. That release is what carries the message, which is why length and fitting direction matter.

Check chain collar for dogs: what it's for in training

A check chain is a training tool: it tightens when the dog pulls and loosens as soon as they stop. It's a technical accessory, used in training clubs and dog sports, where it serves to give a short cue rather than constant pulling.

It needs the right fit and a light hand: wrongly sized, it doesn't loosen, and it's the release that carries all the information for the dog. That's the first thing to check among our check chain collars.

Links, length and fitting: what to check

This one is made of stainless steel links + nylon strap + ABS plastic for the clasp. Blunt-prong collar with double attachment ring and quick-release clasp, adjustable neck size – size can be changed by removing links — choose the length as neck size plus a few centimetres, never more: a collar that's too long doesn't spring back and stays tight. Fitting matters just as much: the moving end must run over the top of the neck. For everyday walks, a adjustable braided rope choke collar for dogs is still the simplest choice.

  • Fit it the right way round, moving end over the neck: that's what lets it release
  • Choose the length as neck size plus a few centimetres — this model: adjustable neck size – size can be changed by removing links
  • Place it high on the neck, just behind the ears, not at the base
  • Take it off after the session – it's not made to be worn all the time
  • Never use it as a fixed tie-out point or without supervision
  • Look after the links: hand clean with a damp cloth – air dry

Using it well, and when to choose a harness instead

Use it in short sessions, on an adult dog, with a trainer if you're a beginner. The useful move is brief and followed by an immediate release; sustained pulling teaches nothing and strains the neck.

For everyday walks, a dog that pulls regularly will be more comfortable — and so will you — with a no-pull dog harness, which spreads the pressure across the chest. The two aren't opposed: one is a training-session tool, the other is kit for going out.

Two precautions whatever the model: never leave it on a dog left alone, as the links catch easily, and avoid it on breeds prone to glaucoma — bulldog, cocker spaniel, shih tzu, basset — where pressure on the neck is not advised.

FAQ

Is it suitable for a cat?

Only with a safety buckle that releases under pressure. A cat that gets caught on a branch must be able to free itself: outdoors, that's non-negotiable.

What is it made of?

Stainless steel links + nylon strap + ABS plastic fastening. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying. A collar that stays damp under the fur causes irritation at the base of the neck, often spotted too late.

How do I measure neck size?

Use a tape measure around the base of the neck, where the collar naturally sits, leaving two fingers of slack. That's the measurement that counts, not your pet's weight.
