Filling, cover and base: what survives the wash

This one is made of soft, padded polyester fibre. Rectangular cushion, S: 30×30 cm • M: 50×40 cm • L: 60×50 cm • XL: 80×60 cm • 2XL: 100×80 cm — measure your dog lying on their side. Quilted or baffled filling stays in place in the wash; loose stuffing bunches up in the corners from the second machine wash. Check the non-slip base on smooth floors. For a main bed, look at a model such as quilted Striped Cushion for Dogs & Cats with more thickness is a better bet.

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one, however perfect: your dog follows you from room to room, and a bed right where you are stops him climbing on the sofa. It's often the simplest fix for that battle.

A thin cushion isn't enough as the main bed for a large or older dog: on tiles it protects neither from the cold nor from the hard floor. For the night, a mattress with dense foam really makes a difference.

A washing tip that makes it last much longer: wash the cover on its own at thirty degrees, and dry the filling flat. A tumble dryer, even on low heat, breaks down the stuffing fibres – a cushion loses half its volume in three cycles.

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

What is it made of?

Soft padded polyester fibre. The material dictates the care, so check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.
