He's held in place if you brake hard — it clips into the car's own seat belt buckle, the one that really holds

He stops bothering you at the wheel — the length limits his movement without pinning him down

You stay within the law — an unrestrained animal hinders driving, and is penalised as such

Dog car harness: holding them in place under braking

At 50 km/h, an unrestrained twenty-kilo dog becomes a projectile weighing several hundred kilos. It flies through the car, and the front passengers are right in its path. That's exactly what a dog car harness is for.

It differs from a walking harness on one key point: the straps and attachment points are designed to take an impact, not pulling on a walk. That's what sets apart our dog car harness.

Attachment points, straps and standards: what to check

This one is made of reinforced woven nylon + aircraft-grade aluminium snap hook. A wide car harness spreads the impact across the chest. Paired with the Double Elastic Dog Car Seat Belt, it keeps your dog in place for the whole journey.

  • Run the strap through the seat belt, never through a headrest hook
  • Choose WIDE straps: they spread the impact instead of concentrating it
  • Put your dog in the back: an airbag going off kills a dog sitting in the front
  • Keep it short: a dog car harness with too much slack lets them pick up speed before stopping
  • Check the stitching regularly: hand wash in lukewarm water, air dry
  • Never use a walking harness instead: its straps aren't designed for it

Fitting it properly, and common mistakes

It must be adjusted short: a few centimetres of slack is enough for your dog to pick up speed before being stopped, which makes the impact worse instead of cushioning it. They should be able to sit and lie down, not move around.

Never attach it to the collar, under any circumstances. And for small dogs or long journeys, a dog car seat also gives the side support that the harness alone can't.

A real-world check: once it's fitted, pull hard on the strap as if you were braking. If the dog can move forward more than twenty centimetres, it's too loose. It's the only check that counts, and it takes five seconds before you set off.

FAQ

Which length should I choose?

One to two metres for walks in town, where you want to keep your dog close. Beyond three metres, the lead is for letting it explore open ground, not for walking along a pavement.

What is it made of?

Reinforced woven nylon + aircraft-grade aluminium clip. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Green, Khaki green, Red, Orange, Pink, Sky blue, Blue, Purple and Black share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.
