Dog car harness: holding them in place under braking

At 50 km/h, an unrestrained twenty-kilo dog becomes a projectile weighing several hundred kilos. It flies through the car, and the front passengers are right in its path. That's exactly what a dog car harness is for.

It differs from a walking harness on one key point: the straps and attachment points are designed to take an impact, not pulling on a walk. That's what sets apart our dog car harnesses.

Attachment points, straps and standards: what to check

This one is made of high-density nylon + stainless metal + shock-absorbing elastic. A wide car harness spreads the impact across the chest. Paired with the Elastic Dog Car Seat Belt, it keeps your dog in place for the whole journey.

  • Run the strap through the seat belt, never through a headrest hook
  • Choose WIDE straps: they spread the impact instead of concentrating it
  • Put your dog in the back: an airbag going off kills a dog sitting in the front
  • Keep it short: a dog car harness with too much slack lets them pick up speed before stopping
  • Check the stitching regularly: hand or machine washable, quick-drying
  • Never use a walking harness instead: its straps aren't designed for it

Fitting it properly, and common mistakes

It must be adjusted short: a few centimetres of slack is enough for your dog to pick up speed before being stopped, which makes the impact worse instead of cushioning it. They should be able to sit and lie down, not move around.

Never attach it to the collar, under any circumstances. And for small dogs or long journeys, a dog car seat also gives the side support that the harness alone can't.

A real-world check: once it's fitted, pull hard on the strap as if you were braking. If the dog can move forward more than twenty centimetres, it's too loose. It's the only check that counts, and it takes five seconds before you set off.

FAQ

Does it fit every vehicle?

The headrest fastenings suit the vast majority of saloons and estates. Compare the stated dimensions with your back seat before ordering.

What is it made of?

High-density nylon + stainless steel + shock-absorbing elastics. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

How do I clean it?

Run the vacuum over it after every journey, and machine wash at 30 °C when the model allows. Dry flat, never in the tumble dryer.

Do I have to restrain my pet in the car?

The law requires that your pet doesn't distract you while driving. In practice, a loose dog becomes a projectile under braking: restraint protects the passengers as much as it does your dog.
