Filling, cover and base: what survives the wash

This one is made of polyester (breathable mesh + non-slip base). Quilted or baffled filling stays evenly spread in the wash; loose stuffing ends up in lumps in the corners by the second machine cycle. Check the non-slip base on a smooth floor. For a main bed, a dog and cat cushion with cosy paw print with more thickness is a better bet.

  • Choose a stitched filling – loose stuffing turns into lumps by the second wash
  • Check for a removable cover: hand washable. Light and easy to store
  • Go for a non-slip base if your floor is tiled or wooden
  • Spread several dog cushions around the home rather than one very big one
  • Keep one in the boot – it gives him a familiar spot in the car
  • Shake it regularly to plump up the filling

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one, however perfect: your dog follows you from room to room, and a bed right where you are stops him climbing on the sofa. It's often the simplest fix for that battle.

A thin cushion isn't enough as the main bed for a large or older dog: on tiles it protects neither from the cold nor from the hard floor. For the night, a dog mattress with dense foam really makes a difference.

A washing tip that makes it last much longer: wash the cover on its own at thirty degrees, and dry the filling flat. A tumble dryer, even on low heat, breaks down the stuffing fibres – a cushion loses half its volume in three cycles.

FAQ

Is my dog likely to chew it?

The cover stands up to normal claws, but a dog that chews everything out of habit will end up puncturing any mat. If so, put it under a thin blanket for the first few days while it gets used to it.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S (45x37cm), M (54x42cm), L (73x51cm) and XL (80x65cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I clean it?

A damp cloth and mild soap are all it takes. It can't go in the washing machine or tumble dryer: the gel pouch won't survive the spin.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Yellow, Green, Pink and Grey share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.
