He manages to sleep in it, which is the hardest part — a material that lets him rest his head on the floor

You adjust it to his neck — too loose and he takes it off, too tight and he gets hurt: that's what matters

Cat recovery cone in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). It keeps the wound out of reach of the tongue while it heals. Length is the critical point: too short and it won't protect, too long and your cat can't reach the bowl.

Cat recovery cone after surgery or an injury

A cat licking a wound opens it up, infects it and delays healing by several days. That's the only job of a recovery cone: keeping the wound out of reach of tongue and claws until it closes.

The catch is that the wrong cone also stops them eating, drinking and sleeping — and a cat that doesn't eat for two days risks serious liver damage. That's what guides our cat recovery cones.

Détail de la matière : polyuréthane Thermoplastique (TPU)

Rigid, soft or inflatable: which lets them eat and sleep

This one is made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Rigid cone with soft black edge, several sizes available (adjustable) — it should extend about two centimetres beyond the nose, no more: too long and your cat can no longer reach the bowl. A soft or inflatable model is easier to live with day to day but won't protect a paw wound. For a wound on the flank, opt for our flower-shaped recovery collar for recovery is often the better choice.

  • Check they can eat and drink WITH the cone on – if not, raise the bowls
  • Allow about two centimetres beyond the nose — this model: several sizes available (adjustable)
  • Slip two fingers under the collar – a cat cone that's too tight hurts the neck
  • Keep it on day AND night – a few minutes of licking is enough to reopen a wound
  • Check the wound twice a day – redness or swelling means a trip to the vet
  • Easy to clean: clean by hand with a damp cloth

How long to keep it on, and how to adjust it

Allow ten to fourteen days, i.e. until the stitches come out, and keep it on at night: that's when most wounds get reopened. Raise the food and water bowls — a cat in a cone can't reach a bowl on the floor.

Don't take it off because they look miserable: two minutes of licking can undo a week of healing. If it truly stops them living normally, recovery suit for recovery is the alternative to ask your vet about.

One practical detail that makes all the difference: a cat in a cone can no longer groom or scratch. Keep an eye on their ears and eyes, and brush them once a day on their behalf. It also makes those ten days far more bearable for them.

FAQ

Will my cat accept it?

Cats accept what they discover on their own. Put the accessory in a room they use, without showing it to them, and give it two or three days before drawing any conclusions.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it suitable for an indoor cat?

That's actually its main use: an indoor cat spends most of the day alone, and boredom soon turns into scratched furniture or night-time wake-ups.

What is it made of?

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
