They stop sleeping on the sofa — a comfy, well-placed bed replaces yours

They sleep stretched out, not forced into a ball — big enough to stretch out with legs extended, which makes all the difference over twelve hours of sleep

Description
Cosy cat bed made from polyester. A cat who sleeps curled up wants something to brace his back against: the height of the rim, and filling that doesn't flatten, decide whether it actually gets used.

Cat bed for cats who curl up and love a rim

A cat who sleeps curled up wants something to brace his back against. That's why he picks boxes, laundry baskets and sofa corners over a flat mat: it's not the softness that draws him, it's the rim. A bolster cat bed recreates exactly that.

The second criterion is size, and the usual mistake is going too big: a cat wants a snug space, not a swimming pool. These two points are how we sort our cat beds.

Rim, filling and washing: what makes a good cat bed

This one is made from polyester. Round, with a raised rim all the way round, M (50x50x8cm), L (60x60x8cm) — compare it with your cat curled up, not stretched out: he should fit snugly with his back against the rim. Filling that flattens in three weeks defeats the whole point – that's where lifespan is decided. For a cat who sprawls rather than curls up, a two-level felt tunnel bed for cats in a flat style will suit him better.

  • Measure your cat curled up, not stretched out – this bed: M (50x50x8cm), L (60x60x8cm)
  • Check the rim height – it's what a cat looks for before softness
  • Place it up high or against a wall, never in a walkway
  • Choose dense filling – a cat bed that's flat within three weeks stops being used
  • Pop in a piece of clothing that smells of you for the first few days
  • Allow one bed per cat – they rarely share happily

Where to put it so he actually sleeps in it

A cat chooses where to sleep based on warmth, view and quiet. Against a wall, up high, near a gentle heat source and away from foot traffic: that combination works almost every time. Put the same bed in the middle of the living room and it will stay empty.

If he keeps sleeping elsewhere, move the bed to the spot he's chosen rather than carrying him to it. And for a cat who sleeps stretched out on his side, a cat cushion in a flat style will suit him better than one with raised sides.

One detail that often makes the difference: don't wash the bed too soon. It takes two to three weeks to pick up his scent, and that scent is what makes it his place. After that, a monthly wash won't bother anyone.

FAQ

Will it stand up to a dog that chews?

No toy is indestructible. Dense rubber models last much longer than plush, but a determined chewer will get the better of them eventually: keep an eye on its condition and replace it before pieces come off.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (50x50x8cm) and L (60x60x8cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it suitable for a puppy?

Check the size first: a toy that fits whole in the mouth is a swallowing risk. For a teething puppy, go for softer materials.

Should I leave it out all the time?

No — and that's what makes it interesting. A toy that's always there becomes part of the furniture; brought out and put away, it keeps its appeal for months.
