Placing it, and getting them to use it

A dog takes to a bed placed where they already slept, not where the furniture looks nice. Watch for a few days: they almost always have one or two favourite spots, where they can see the room and the door. That's where it should go.

Add a blanket on top from day one: it catches hair and dust, and washes without removing the cover. For a dog that prefers to sleep flat and cool, a firm dog mattress will suit better.

One thing people always forget: the entry height. For an older or arthritic dog, a twenty-centimetre edge to step over is enough for the bed never to be used. A comfy seat never makes up for an entry that's too high.

FAQ

Does it need to go in the freezer?

No. The gel inside is activated by pressure and body temperature: you lay it flat, your pet lies on it, and the surface drops a few degrees all by itself. Putting it in the freezer would harden the gel and make it uncomfortable.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (45x60cm), L (55x70cm), XL (65x80cm) and 2XL (75x90cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How long does it stay cool?

Three to four hours of continuous use, then it recharges by itself in about twenty minutes once your pet has moved off. There's nothing to plug in or recharge.

Is my dog likely to chew it?

The cover stands up to normal claws, but a dog that chews everything out of habit will end up puncturing any mat. If so, put it under a thin blanket for the first few days while it gets used to it.
