Placing it, and getting them to use it

A dog takes to a bed placed where they already slept, not where the furniture looks nice. Watch for a few days: they almost always have one or two favourite spots, where they can see the room and the door. That's where it should go.

Add a blanket on top from day one: it catches hair and dust, and washes without removing the cover. For a dog that prefers to sleep flat and cool, a firm dog mattress will suit better.

One thing people always forget: the entry height. For an older or arthritic dog, a twenty-centimetre edge to step over is enough for the bed never to be used. A comfy seat never makes up for an entry that's too high.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (76x51x16cm), L (91x69x18cm) and XL (113x81x18cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Grey, Beige and Blue share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.
