A dog doesn't always sleep in the same place: he follows the room you're in, the warmth, the light. A cushion is exactly what moves easily, which is why it complements a main bed rather than replacing it.

Filling, cover and base: what survives the wash

This one is made of soft non-slip polyester. Rectangular cushion, 120 × 60 cm — measure your dog lying on their side. Quilted or baffled filling stays in place in the wash; loose stuffing bunches up in the corners from the second machine wash. Check the non-slip base on smooth floors. For a main bed, look at a model such as thick Bone-Print Mat for Dogs & Cats with more thickness is a better bet.

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one, however perfect: your dog follows you from room to room, and a bed right where you are stops him climbing on the sofa. It's often the simplest fix for that battle.

A thin cushion isn't enough as the main bed for a large or older dog: on tiles it protects neither from the cold nor from the hard floor. For the night, a mattress with dense foam really makes a difference.

A washing tip that makes it last much longer: wash the cover on its own at thirty degrees, and dry the filling flat. A tumble dryer, even on low heat, breaks down the stuffing fibres – a cushion loses half its volume in three cycles.

Is it suitable for an older pet?

Check the thickness of the filling: above eight centimetres it genuinely relieves the joints. Below that, it's a mat, not a mattress.

What is it made of?

Soft non-slip polyester. The material dictates the care, so check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.
