Hands-free dog lead for running or walking with your dog

Running with a lead in your hand throws off your stride and sends every jolt straight up your arm. A hands-free lead changes everything: the pull goes through the waist belt, so through your centre of gravity, and your running action stays natural.

It's also handy for simply walking while pushing a pram or carrying shopping. The technical detail is the shock absorber, which soaks up sudden jerks, and it's how we choose our hands-free dog leads.

Belt, shock absorber and length: what stops the jolts

This one is made of reinforced nylon + metal hooks + waterproof fabric. Bungee lead with shock absorber + multi-purpose belt pouch, stretch lead from 120 cm to 175 cm – Pouch with storage and built-in clips — the useful length is between 1.2 and 2 metres: any shorter and your dog bumps into you at every change of pace; any longer and they cut across in front of you. Make sure there's a bungee shock absorber and a quick-release clip. A reflective rope hands-free dog lead is a must: never a collar when running.

  • Always clip to a harness, never a collar: when running, a jolt on the collar injures the windpipe
  • Check the elastic shock absorber – it's what cushions changes of pace
  • Set the length between 1.2 m and 2 m — this model: stretch lead from 120 cm to 175 cm – Pouch with storage and built-in clips
  • Find the quick release and test it calmly before you set off
  • Wear the belt on your hips, not your waist: that's what absorbs the pull
  • Strap care: hand wash recommended for the lead and pouch, air dry

Running with your dog: where to start

A dog can't run for kilometres overnight, and a growing puppy shouldn't run far at all — its growth plates can't take it. Wait until growth is complete, then build up gradually.

Avoid hot tarmac in summer: paws burn within minutes at temperatures you barely notice. And always clip on to a no-pull dog harness, as a running jolt on a collar causes real injury.

A test to do before your first run: clip the lead to a fixed point and give it a sharp tug with the belt on. You should be able to release it one-handed, in under two seconds, without looking. If not, this system isn't made for running.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

Warm soapy water, then air dry. Avoid the washing machine: it damages the stitching on the handle, which takes the most strain.

What are the exact dimensions?

Stretchy lead from 120 cm to 175 cm – Pouch with storage and built-in snap hooks. This is the measurement to check against your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows straight away in use.

Which length should I choose?

One to two metres for walks in town, where you want to keep your dog close. Beyond three metres, the lead is for letting it explore open ground, not for walking along a pavement.

What is it made of?

Reinforced nylon + metal hooks + waterproof fabric. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
