Dog paddling pool: cool him down safely

Dogs don't sweat: they shed heat by panting, and that system quickly maxes out above thirty degrees. A pool gives your dog a simple way to bring his temperature down through his paws and belly, where the blood vessels sit close to the skin.

It's also a great way for an energetic dog to burn off steam without stressing his joints. What decides whether it gets used is the sides: too floppy and they collapse the first time he leans on them. That's how we sort our dog paddling pools.

Rigid sides, non-slip base and drainage: what matters

This one is made of PP + non-slip PVC. Round and foldable, 80 × 20 cm | 120 × 30 cm | 140 × 30 cm | 160 × 30 cm — check that your dog can lie down in it, not just stand, and that the sides hold firm when he rests his front paws on the edge. A non-slip floor prevents the kind of slip that puts a dog off water for good. A drain plug saves you tipping it over when it's full. A foldable square non-slip paddling pool for dogs and cats comes in handy on days when you can't get it out.

  • Make sure your dog can lie down in it — this model: 80 × 20 cm | 120 × 30 cm | 140 × 30 cm | 160 × 30 cm
  • Check the sides are rigid – a dog paddling pool that sags the first time he leans on it is soon abandoned
  • Look for a non-slip base – one slip is enough to put a dog off water
  • Set it up in the shade – in the sun, the water goes above thirty degrees within an hour
  • Empty it every evening: rinse with clean water and leave to dry before storing
  • Let him get in on his own – never carry him in

Where to set it up, and how to look after it

In the shade, on flat ground, never in full sun: the water heats up very fast and loses its point. Empty it every evening rather than letting it stand — still, lukewarm water turns into a soup within two days, and dogs drink it.

Never leave a dog unsupervised, even in twenty centimetres of water – and especially not a short-nosed dog. On days when the pool isn't an option, a cooling mat keeps him cool indoors.

A health point that's rarely mentioned: hyponatraemia. A dog who spends ages biting at the hose or fetching in the water swallows a lot of it, and his blood can become diluted. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, with breaks out of the water, rule out this risk completely.

FAQ

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 80x20cm, 120x30cm, 140x30cm and 160x30cm. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.

What is it made of?

PP + non-slip PVC. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
