Dog paddling pool: cool him down safely

Dogs don't sweat: they shed heat by panting, and that system quickly maxes out above thirty degrees. A pool gives your dog a simple way to bring his temperature down through his paws and belly, where the blood vessels sit close to the skin.

It's also a great way for an energetic dog to burn off steam without stressing his joints. What decides whether it gets used is the sides: too floppy and they collapse the first time he leans on them. That's how we sort our dog paddling pools.

Piscine Carrée Pliable Antidérapante pour Chiens et Chats — 50 × 50 × 10 cm

Rigid sides, non-slip base and drainage: what matters

This one is made of tough PVC. Square with foldable sides, 50 × 50 × 10 cm — check your dog can lie down in it, not just stand, and that the sides hold when he puts his front paws on the edge. A non-slip base prevents the kind of slip that can put a dog off water for good. A drain plug saves you tipping it out when full. A non-slip summer dog pool with water jets comes in handy on days when you can't get it out.

  • Check your dog can lie down in it; this model: 50 × 50 × 10 cm
  • Check the sides are rigid – a dog paddling pool that sags the first time he leans on it is soon abandoned
  • Look for a non-slip base – one slip is enough to put a dog off water
  • Set it up in the shade – in the sun, the water goes above thirty degrees within an hour
  • Empty it every evening: quick wipe with a damp cloth
  • Let him get in on his own – never carry him in

Where to set it up, and how to look after it

In the shade, on flat ground, never in full sun: the water heats up very fast and loses its point. Empty it every evening rather than letting it stand — still, lukewarm water turns into a soup within two days, and dogs drink it.

Never leave a dog unsupervised, even in twenty centimetres of water – and especially not a short-nosed dog. On days when the pool isn't an option, a cooling mat keeps him cool indoors.

A health point that's rarely mentioned: hyponatraemia. A dog who spends ages biting at the hose or fetching in the water swallows a lot of it, and his blood can become diluted. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, with breaks out of the water, rule out this risk completely.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

What are the exact dimensions?

50 × 50 × 10 cm. Compare this measurement with your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, a poor fit shows straight away in use.

Will my cat accept it?

Cats accept what they discover on their own. Put the accessory in a room they use, without showing it to them, and give it two or three days before drawing any conclusions.

What is it made of?

Tough PVC. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
