It folds away when you have guests — the structure comes apart and stores flat

He goes in by himself — a wide enough opening: one that's too narrow stays empty for months

He sleeps warm with nothing on his back — an enclosed space holds its own warmth: that's how a burrow works

Cardboard cat house: why cardboard works so well

There's a reason a cat prefers the box a parcel came in to an expensive bed: cardboard insulates, absorbs noise, holds in its scent and hides it completely. That's exactly the combination a cat looks for to sleep.

A cardboard house offers all of that with a stable shape and an entrance sized for your cat. It also has the advantage of being scratchable without harm. That leaves thickness, which decides how long it lasts — and that's the key criterion for our cardboard cat houses.

Thickness, assembly and scratching: what lasts a few months

This one is made of high-density corrugated cardboard. Rectangular with side entrance, 60 × 30 × 30 cm — double-wall corrugated cardboard lasts several months where single-wall sags within weeks. Check the entrance size: a cat must be able to walk in without ducking, otherwise it won't go in. For lasting outdoor use, a two-level upright scratcher house for large cats will be a better fit.

  • Choose double-wall corrugated cardboard — single-wall sags within a few weeks
  • Check the entrance size — this model measures 60 × 30 × 30 cm
  • Put it against a wall, with its back to the room, never in the middle of the living room
  • Let your cat scratch it — that's what it's for, not damage
  • Pop a familiar blanket inside and your cat will adopt its cardboard house within a day
  • Keep it dry: dust regularly and keep away from damp

Where to put it, and when to replace it

Against a wall, in a corner, away from foot traffic: that's where a hideaway gets used. A house placed in the middle of a room loses its whole point — the idea is precisely not to be exposed.

Cardboard doesn't like damp: it's an indoor item, not one for the patio. Replace it when the roof sags or it has picked up a smell. For an outdoor shelter that lasts, an outdoor cat house with insulation is a must.

An often-overlooked use: a cardboard house is the best welcome tool for a cat arriving in a new home. It immediately gives it a retreat where it can't be seen, which dramatically shortens the phase spent hiding under furniture. Very often, three days instead of two weeks.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

A thorough clean once a month, with the bedding taken out and washed every two weeks. It's trapped damp that does the damage, not the cold.

What is it made of?

High-density corrugated cardboard. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Will my pet actually use it?

Place it out of the wind and away from foot traffic, and put in a cloth that carries their scent. A kennel exposed to the wind stays empty.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: White, Blue, Green and Pink all share the same dimensions and the same finish. It's purely a question of looks.
