Dog coat: rainy walks without coming home soaked

A dog that comes home soaked stays chilled for hours, and in an older or arthritic dog that means stiffness the next day. A coat solves this exact problem: keeping the back and lower back dry, where fur takes longest to dry.

Don't confuse waterproof with warm: they're two separate functions, and many models only do one. That's the first filter for our dog coats.

Détail de la matière : polyester imperméable

Waterproofing, lining and harness: what to look for

This one is made of waterproof polyester. Hooded coat with reflective strip and lead opening, see size guide — measure the back length from the withers to the base of the tail; that's the measurement that matters. Check whether there's an opening for the harness clip: without one, you'll have to undress your dog before every walk. In dry, cold weather, a dog raincoat with high collar, adjustable is enough and gets in the way less.

  • Measure the back length from withers to tail — this model: see size guide
  • Look for a harness opening, or you'll have to take everything off before every walk
  • Let it air-dry: hand wash recommended, air-dry
  • Check it covers the lower back: that's where an older dog gets cold
  • Keep the dog coat for rain and damp cold: it's too warm in dry weather
  • Check the belly straps after every walk: they loosen when damp

Drying it, washing it, and knowing when to skip it

A coat dries in the open air, never on a radiator or in the tumble dryer: heat destroys the water-repellent finish within a few cycles and the garment turns into blotting paper. A rinse in clean water after salty snow noticeably extends its life.

It isn't needed all year round. On a dog with a thick double coat, it's too warm as soon as the rain stops. For dry cold, a jumper is a better fit and less restrictive.

Something you discover at the first real downpour: the hood. Hardly any dog accepts it — it slips over the eyes and muffles hearing. Choose a model where it detaches, or it ends up cut off with scissors, which ruins the waterproof seam.

FAQ

Which length should I choose?

One to two metres for walks in town, where you want to keep your dog close. Beyond three metres, the lead is for letting it explore open ground, not for walking along a pavement.

What is it made of?

Waterproof polyester. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

Will the clip hold a large dog?

Check the stated load in the specifications rather than the look: a zamak clip gives way where a steel one holds. It's the part that fails first on a dog lead.
