Dog cooling mat for hot weather

Dogs don't sweat: they shed heat by panting and through their paw pads. Above thirty degrees this system gets overwhelmed – even faster in flat-faced breeds, older dogs and overweight dogs.

A cooling mat works through contact with the belly and flanks, where blood vessels are close to the skin. It needs no electricity or freezer. What makes the difference is the thickness of the gel, and that's how we sort our cooling mats.

Gel, thickness and claw resistance: what matters

This one is made of Ice Silk polyester (cooling fabric), polyester fibre (filling). Check how tough the cover is: a dog that scratches can puncture it, and the gel must not be swallowed. For more serious cooling, a extra-large dog cooling mat – breathable summer ice pad does a better job.

  • Put it in the shade on a cool floor, never in the sun
  • Let him choose whether to use it – a dog regulates himself very well when he has the choice
  • Keep an eye on the cover – a punctured cooling mat must be removed straight away
  • Easy to clean: hand or machine washable. Stands up to repeated washing without losing its shape
  • Don't put it in the freezer unless stated – the gel needs to stay supple
  • Add plenty of fresh water – that's what matters most

Where to put it, and what it doesn't replace

In the shade, on an already cool floor, somewhere your dog can choose whether or not to lie on it: that's how it works best. A dog left free regulates himself very well, as long as he has access to shade and water.

This mat won't protect against heatstroke: heavy panting, dark red gums and staggering are life-threatening emergencies – cool him down gradually and see a vet. For a real drop in temperature, a dog paddling pool works far better.

A test that beats any thermometer: rest the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If you can't keep it there, neither can your dog, and no mat will make up for a walk at that time of day. Keeping cool starts with when you go out.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

A damp cloth and mild soap are all it takes. It can't go in the washing machine or tumble dryer: the gel pouch won't survive the spin.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S (40x50cm), M (50x60cm), L (55x70cm), XL (70x100cm) and 2XL (100x150cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Does it need to go in the freezer?

No. The gel inside is activated by pressure and body temperature: you lay it flat, your pet lies on it, and the surface drops a few degrees all by itself. Putting it in the freezer would harden the gel and make it uncomfortable.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Blue, Pink, Coffee and Grey share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.
