Dog cooling mat for hot weather

Dogs don't sweat: they shed heat by panting and through their paw pads. Above thirty degrees this system gets overwhelmed – even faster in flat-faced breeds, older dogs and overweight dogs.

A cooling mat works through contact with the belly and flanks, where blood vessels are close to the skin. It needs no electricity or freezer. What makes the difference is the thickness of the gel, and that's how we sort our cooling mats.

Tapis Rafraîchissant Extra-Large pour Chien — 102 x 71 cm

Gel, thickness and claw resistance: what matters

This one is made of cotton (inside), Ice Silk surface + breathable mesh (outside). Rectangle, 102 x 71 cm — your dog should be able to stretch out fully on it, belly down: a mat that's too small is only good as a headrest. Check how tough the cover is: a dog that scratches can puncture it, and the gel must not be swallowed. For more serious cooling, a dog cooling mat – self-cooling gel mattress does a better job.

  • Choose a size your dog can stretch out on fully — this mat measures 102 x 71 cm
  • Put it in the shade on a cool floor, never in the sun
  • Let him choose whether to use it – a dog regulates himself very well when he has the choice
  • Keep an eye on the cover – a punctured cooling mat must be removed straight away
  • Easy to clean: hand or machine washable. Dries quickly, keeps its shape
  • Don't put it in the freezer unless stated – the gel needs to stay supple

Where to put it, and what it doesn't replace

In the shade, on an already cool floor, somewhere your dog can choose whether or not to lie on it: that's how it works best. A dog left free regulates himself very well, as long as he has access to shade and water.

This mat won't protect against heatstroke: heavy panting, dark red gums and staggering are life-threatening emergencies – cool him down gradually and see a vet. For a real drop in temperature, a dog paddling pool works far better.

A test that beats any thermometer: rest the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If you can't keep it there, neither can your dog, and no mat will make up for a walk at that time of day. Keeping cool starts with when you go out.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

A damp cloth and mild soap are all it takes. It can't go in the washing machine or tumble dryer: the gel pouch won't survive the spin.

Does it need to go in the freezer?

No. The gel inside is activated by pressure and body temperature: you lay it flat, your pet lies on it, and the surface drops a few degrees all by itself. Putting it in the freezer would harden the gel and make it uncomfortable.

How long does it stay cool?

Three to four hours of continuous use, then it recharges by itself in about twenty minutes once your pet has moved off. There's nothing to plug in or recharge.

Is my dog likely to chew it?

The cover stands up to normal claws, but a dog that chews everything out of habit will end up puncturing any mat. If so, put it under a thin blanket for the first few days while it gets used to it.
