Description
Polyester cat cushion. Lots of cats sleep stretched out on their side rather than curled up: for them, surface area matters more than the height of the sides, and the filling needs to stay evenly spread.

Cat cushion for cats who sleep stretched out, not curled up

Not every cat sleeps curled up. Many stretch out on their side, legs extended, especially when it's warm or when they feel safe. For these cats, a bed with raised sides is a constraint, not a comfort: what they need is a flat cushion.

Surface area then matters more than height, and the filling has to stay put rather than drift to the edges. That's what sets apart our cat cushions.

Filling, cover and surface: what matters day to day

This one is made of polyester. Rectangular, several sizes available — measure your cat stretched out full length: that's the measurement that counts here. Quilted filling stays evenly spread; loose filling ends up in lumps in the corners after three washes. Check that the cover comes off. For a cat that sleeps curled up and likes an edge to lean on, try a model such as cosy U-Shaped Cushion for Cats and Small Dogs will suit better.

  • Measure your cat stretched out full length — this cushion comes in several sizes
  • Choose quilted filling — loose stuffing drifts to the edges within three washes
  • Wash the cover regularly: hand wash recommended, air dry
  • Put it somewhere high or near a window, not in the middle of the floor
  • Wait two to three weeks before the first wash — a cat cushion needs to carry their scent
  • Allow one bed per cat, plus one more if one chases the other off

Where to put it, and why they sometimes ignore it

A cat chooses where to sleep by warmth, view and quiet — in that order. The radiator, the windowsill and the top of a cupboard almost always beat a cushion placed on the floor in the middle of the room.

If they ignore it, move the cushion to the spot they've chosen themselves, rather than trying to settle them on it. And if they keep sleeping curled up against an armrest, what they need is a cat cave bed with raised sides, not a cushion.

A useful thing to check before buying: watch how your cat sleeps in summer and in winter. Many switch — stretched out when it's warm, curled up when it's cold. In that case a flat cushion and a bed with raised sides complement each other; it isn't doubling up.

FAQ

Is it suitable for an older pet?

Check the thickness of the filling: above eight centimetres it genuinely relieves the joints. Below that, it's a mat, not a mattress.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S(49x32cm), M (61x41cm), L (69x52cm) and XXL (100x75cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

What is it made of?

Polyester. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
