They gain some height — a lookout post, which counts double in a multi-pet home

They let off steam without climbing the curtains — a support of their own absorbs the energy that went into the furniture

Your sofa stops paying the price — cats scratch to mark and keep their claws in shape: give them a better-placed option and they drop the sofa

Description
Medium-density fibreboard cat scratcher. Height and stability decide whether it gets adopted: an adult cat stretches to nearly sixty centimetres, and a scratcher that tips over at the first swipe is never used again.

Cat scratcher for a cat that claws the sofa

A cat doesn't scratch out of naughtiness: it's maintaining its claws, stretching and marking its territory with the scent glands in its paw pads. Banning the sofa without offering something else never works — it needs a surface that grips at least as well as the fabric it has chosen.

That's why a scratcher is chosen on material and height, not colour. Too short, and the cat can't stretch out fully and goes back to the sofa. It's the first thing we look at across our cat scratchers.

Sisal, cardboard or rope: what holds up in use

This one is made of medium-density fibreboard. Sisal remains the benchmark: it grips the claws and wears slowly, whereas cardboard breaks down into shreds you find all over the room. Post, ramp or mat depending on the model, one size — height is the figure to look at, as an adult cat stretches to nearly sixty centimetres. For a cat that climbs and likes to watch from up high, the multi-level cat tree with house, raised bowls and sisal scratcher will be a better fit.

  • Place it against the furniture it already scratches, not in a quiet corner: you're replacing a habit, not moving it
  • Check the height first — an adult cat needs to stretch out fully
  • Choose sisal for durability — this model is made of medium-density fibreboard
  • Make it stable: a cat scratcher that tips over at the first swipe is never used again
  • Rub it with catnip for the first few days to get the habit started
  • Plan one scratcher per living area if your cat marks in several places

Where to put the scratcher so it actually gets used

Location is everything. A scratcher tucked away in a closed bedroom is useless: it needs to be on your cat's route, near where it sleeps, and above all in front of the furniture it has already picked. Cats scratch when they wake up — put it where yours wakes up.

Don't take it away when it starts to wear: a shredded scratcher is a scratcher that's been adopted, and swapping it for a new one often sets off the damage to the sofa again. If your cat climbs as much as it scratches, a cat tree covers both needs in a single footprint.

Finally, never punish a cat caught scratching the sofa: it won't make the connection, it will just learn to do it when you're not looking. Make the other surface more appealing — don't make this one unpleasant.

FAQ

Will my cat really use it?

It will if it's in the right spot: cats scratch when they wake from a nap and near walkways. Put it next to their bed or the living room door, not in an unused corner.

Can the sisal be replaced?

On post models, yes: the rope can be wound back around the post. On cardboard scratchers, the pad flips over once worn, which doubles its lifespan.

Will it stop my cat scratching the sofa?

In most cases, as long as you place the scratcher near the scratched area and make the sofa less tempting for the first few days. A scratcher at the other end of the room changes nothing.

Is it stable enough for a large cat?

Check the base weight in the specifications: that's what determines stability, not height. A scratcher that tips over once will never be used again.
