Muzzle for medium and large dogs: choosing the right one

A dog that growls at the vet isn't a nasty dog: he's scared, and his mouth is the only way he has to say so. A muzzle doesn't punish him — it lets you get him treated, transport him and take him out without things getting out of hand. I also recommend one for dogs that swallow everything they find on the ground, a habit that tends to end up at the vet's anyway.

What makes all the difference is the fit: badly adjusted, a muzzle rides up towards the eyes and the dog spends the whole walk trying to get it off. It's the first thing to check among our dog muzzles, even before the material.

Adjustable bite-proof muzzle: material, fit and sizes

This one is made of polyester, which makes all the difference when worn: a rigid muzzle rubs the bridge of the nose sore within twenty minutes, while a soft one follows its shape without pressing. Adjustable muzzle covering the snout — check this detail before the price. 4 sizes, S to XL: pick the right one with a tape measure, by muzzle circumference and length, never by your dog's weight. For a short muzzle or a very small dog, the Comfort Adjustable Dog Muzzle and Collar will be a better fit.

  • Adjust the neck strap separately from the muzzle loop: that's what stops the dog muzzle riding up towards the eyes
  • Measure with a tape before ordering — this model comes in 4 sizes, S to XL
  • Let him pant and drink during walks — something a closed muzzle won't allow
  • Take it to the vet's: most vets ask for one for painful treatments
  • Take him out with confidence in town, on the train or on public transport that requires one
  • Easy to look after: hand clean with a damp cloth. Air dry

Getting your dog used to a muzzle in a few days

A muzzle doesn't come out for the first time on the morning of the appointment. Put it on for five minutes the day before and the day before that, with a treat straight afterwards: your dog needs to link it with something pleasant before being made to wear it. Plan three short sessions rather than one long one.

Never leave it on a dog left alone, or during prolonged exercise in hot weather. And if yours pulls hard enough to shift it, the problem isn't the muzzle but the pulling: a no-pull dog harness sorts out both at once.

One last check before ordering: the muzzle should leave two fingers' space between the straps and the skin, and your dog should be able to open his mouth a good centimetre. If he can't, it's too tight, and no amount of training will make up for that discomfort.

FAQ

How do I get my dog used to it?

In stages, over several days: a treat through the basket, then a few seconds fastened, then a short walk. A muzzle forced on all at once creates a lasting aversion.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S, M, L and XL. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than weight: two animals of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, go for the larger one.

Is it compulsory?

It is on public transport and for certain types of dog, depending on the regulations in force. Check with your local council.

What is it made of?

Polyester. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
