They stop sleeping on the sofa — a comfy, well-placed bed replaces yours

They sleep stretched out, not forced into a ball — big enough to stretch out with legs extended, which makes all the difference over twelve hours of sleep

Dog bean bag: a bed that moulds to your dog's position

A bean bag gives under your dog's weight and rises up around them: they settle in without having to hunt for the right position. That's what dogs who sleep curled up love, and it's why they stay on it longer than on a flat mat.

The downside is well known: filling that compacts turns the bean bag into a pancake within a few months. So density is the real test for our dog bean bags.

Filling, cover and base: what lasts over time

This one is made of wood fibreboard. Round, with a raised rim all the way round, one size — measure your dog curled up, not stretched out, and check that the cover comes off completely: that's what decides whether the bean bag gets washed or replaced. For an older or heavier dog, giant plush paw cushion for dogs and cats with firm support is kinder to the joints than soft filling.

  • Measure your dog curled up rather than stretched out — this bean bag is one size
  • Check the density — a dog bean bag that compacts becomes a pancake within months
  • Shake it regularly to plump up the filling
  • Put it out of the way and away from floor-level draughts
  • Add a blanket on top — it's far easier to wash
  • Go for a firm bed for a dog with arthritis — softness supports nothing

Where to put it, and which dogs it suits

It suits dogs who sleep curled up and medium-sized dogs. For a large, older or arthritic dog, a firm bed gives better support: softness feels comfortable but leaves the joints resting on the floor.

Put it where your dog already sleeps, out of the way of foot traffic. And if you're after real support rather than a nest, you need something like mattress with dense filling.

A density test that beats any description: press your fist, with all your weight, into the centre of the bean bag. If your fist reaches the floor, the filling won't support a dog through a whole night — and it will compact all the faster.

FAQ

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying before reuse. Avoid very hot water, which warps plastics and slackens straps.

Is it suitable for all dog sizes?

Go by the dimensions in the specifications rather than the size label: between a beagle and a German shepherd, the weight is sometimes similar, the build never.

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.
