Dog feeding mat in diatomite (diatom mud). The raised edge catches spills instead of letting them run onto the floor, and the grip underneath stops the bowl sliding across the room.

Feeding mat for dogs that splash and push their bowls around

A dog that eats pushes its bowl around; a dog that drinks spills. On wooden floors, standing water eventually leaves marks, and on tiles the bowl slides to the other end of the room. A mat solves both in one go.

What makes the difference is the raised edge — without it, water simply runs over the top — and the grip underneath. That's what we look for in our feeding mats.

Détail de la matière : diatomite (diatom mud)

Edges, grip and material: what really holds

This one is made of diatomite (diatom mud). Oval, 50 × 30 cm (19" × 12") — check the surface extends well beyond both bowls, spills included. A raised edge holds water in instead of letting it run off; silicone grips a smooth floor better than rigid PVC. The non-slip daisy pattern dog feeding mat placed on it must stay put without sliding.

  • Choose a surface well beyond the bowls — this mat: 50 × 30 cm (19" × 12")
  • Check for a raised edge — without it, water simply runs over the top
  • Check the grip underneath — a dog feeding mat that slides is useless
  • Rinse it every day: hand washable – air dry
  • Put it away from foot traffic — a dog disturbed while eating eats too fast
  • Keep it away from the litter tray if you have a cat too

Looking after it, and where to put it

A daily rinse is enough: the biofilm that forms under the bowls is what causes that sour smell after a few days. Above all, remember to lift the mat to dry underneath, or trapped moisture will mark the floor just like spilt water.

Put it out of the way of foot traffic and never next to a litter tray. And if your dog gulps its food or regurgitates, it's the height or shape of the bowls that needs rethinking, not the mat.

A detail that matters on wooden floors: even with a perfectly waterproof mat, lift it once a week. Moisture left underneath doesn't evaporate, and it's that — not the splashes — that eventually makes a floorboard swell.

FAQ

What height is right for my pet?

A raised bowl suits large dogs and older pets: it avoids straining the neck. For a cat or small dog, a bowl on the floor is more natural.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 30.48cm x 48.26cm and 40.64cm x 60.96cm. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Stainless steel or plastic?

Stainless steel holds neither smells nor bacteria and goes in the dishwasher. Plastic scratches over time, and the scratches trap residue — a known cause of chin acne in cats.

Is it non-slip?

Check the specifications for a rubberised base: without one, a light bowl moves at every meal and ends up under the furniture.
