Dog paddling pool: cool him down safely

Dogs don't sweat: they shed heat by panting, and that system quickly maxes out above thirty degrees. A pool gives your dog a simple way to bring his temperature down through his paws and belly, where the blood vessels sit close to the skin.

It's also a great way for an energetic dog to burn off steam without stressing his joints. What decides whether it gets used is the sides: too floppy and they collapse the first time he leans on them. That's how we sort our dog paddling pools.

Détail de la matière : PVC épais triple couche, étanche et durable

Rigid sides, non-slip base and drainage: what matters

This one is made of thick triple-layer PVC, watertight and durable. Rectangular with inflatable rounded edges, 150 × 105 × 52 cm — check that your dog can lie down in it, not just stand, and that the sides hold firm when he rests his front paws on the edge. A non-slip floor prevents the kind of slip that puts a dog off water for good. A drain plug saves you tipping it over when it's full. A summer splash pad for dogs and kids comes in handy on days when you can't get it out.

  • Make sure your dog can lie down in it — this model: 150 × 105 × 52 cm
  • Check the sides are rigid – a dog paddling pool that sags the first time he leans on it is soon abandoned
  • Look for a non-slip base – one slip is enough to put a dog off water
  • Set it up in the shade – in the sun, the water goes above thirty degrees within an hour
  • Empty it every evening: empty completely, wipe down, then leave to air-dry
  • Let him get in on his own – never carry him in

Where to set it up, and how to look after it

In the shade, on flat ground, never in full sun: the water heats up very fast and loses its point. Empty it every evening rather than letting it stand — still, lukewarm water turns into a soup within two days, and dogs drink it.

Never leave a dog unsupervised, even in twenty centimetres of water – and especially not a short-nosed dog. On days when the pool isn't an option, a cooling mat keeps him cool indoors.

A health point that's rarely mentioned: hyponatraemia. A dog who spends ages biting at the hose or fetching in the water swallows a lot of it, and his blood can become diluted. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, with breaks out of the water, rule out this risk completely.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying before reuse. Avoid very hot water, which warps plastics and slackens straps.

What are the exact dimensions?

150 × 105 × 52 cm. Compare this measurement with your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, a poor fit shows straight away in use.

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.

What is it made of?

Thick triple-layer PVC, watertight and durable. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
