GPS dog collar for dogs that roam or hunt

A dog on a scent hears nothing else: it follows its nose and can cover several kilometres before coming back to its senses. GPS turns a blind search into a trail you can follow.

It also lets you set a safe zone around the garden and get an alert the moment it's crossed. Three things decide how useful it really is: battery life, subscription and waterproofing. That's what we look at in our GPS dog tracker collars.

Battery life, subscription and waterproofing: what matters

This one is made of high-density military-grade nylon + zinc alloy buckle. Wide collar with control handle, metal buckle, GPS tracker holder, adjustable size – several sizes available by neck circumference — check the stated battery life in active tracking, not standby: that's where the figures collapse. Waterproofing is essential, as dogs go through water and brambles. And check whether there's a monthly subscription. For night-time visibility, a X-Tag smart wireless GPS tracker for dogs, iOS rounds it off nicely.

  • Compare battery life in ACTIVE TRACKING, never on standby
  • Check for a subscription – it's the cost that catches people out after buying
  • Check it's waterproof – dogs go through water and brambles
  • Attach it to a sturdy collar — this tracker: adjustable size – several sizes available by neck circumference
  • Set a safe zone around the garden – an alert beats a search
  • Charge it at the same time every day: hand wash in lukewarm water, air dry – do not iron

What GPS gives you, and what it doesn't replace

GPS doesn't replace microchip identification: a dog found without its collar can only be identified by its chip. Keep your details up to date on the national microchip database – it's free and takes two minutes.

Also watch out for network coverage in rural areas, where the location may be delayed. And for evening walks, a light-up dog collar makes your dog visible to drivers, which GPS doesn't.

A preventive use that's often more useful than searching: the safe zone. Getting an alert when your dog crosses the garden boundary lets you act within the minute, instead of discovering they're gone an hour later. It's the feature owners of escape artists use most.

FAQ

Does it work in woodland?

GPS needs a clear view of the sky. Under dense tree cover, the position can drift by a few dozen metres until the signal comes back. In open ground, it's accurate to within a few metres.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (36-43cm), L (42-50cm) and XL (50-60cm). Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Is it waterproof?

The models we offer withstand rain and puddles. Prolonged immersion — a dog that swims — isn't guaranteed unless the product page says so explicitly.

What is it made of?

High-density military-grade nylon + zinc alloy buckle. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
