Rigid sides, non-slip base and drainage: what matters

This one is made of eco-friendly PVC. Where to set it up, and how to look after it

In the shade, on flat ground, never in full sun: the water heats up very fast and loses its point. Empty it every evening rather than letting it stand — still, lukewarm water turns into a soup within two days, and dogs drink it.

Never leave a dog unsupervised, even in twenty centimetres of water – and especially not a short-nosed dog. On days when the pool isn't an option, a cooling mat keeps him cool indoors.

A health point that's rarely mentioned: hyponatraemia. A dog who spends ages biting at the hose or fetching in the water swallows a lot of it, and his blood can become diluted. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, with breaks out of the water, rule out this risk completely.

FAQ

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 170cm, 100cm and 150cm. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it suitable for an older pet?

Check the thickness of the filling: above eight centimetres it genuinely relieves the joints. Below that, it's a mat, not a mattress.
