Raised dog bowl for large dogs or dogs with arthritis

A large dog eating off the floor bends his neck and front legs with every mouthful. For an older dog, one with arthritis or one recovering, that position becomes really painful, and many end up eating less simply because bending down hurts.

A raised bowl takes away that strain. What matters is the exact height and stability – a stand that tips puts a dog off for good. That's how we sort our raised dog bowls.

Détail de la matière : acier inoxydable + plastique

Height, stability and bowls: what matters day to day

This one is made of stainless steel + plastic. Round bowl on legs, 14 × 9 cm — at the right height, the bowls sit level with the bottom of the chest, dog standing. Too high and your dog stretches upwards and gulps air; too low and you've gained nothing. Check the bowls lift out for washing. A wooden raised dog bowl – comfort and better digestion catches any spills.

  • Set the bowls level with the bottom of the chest, dog standing — this stand: 14 × 9 cm
  • Check it's stable – a raised dog bowl that tips over gets abandoned for good
  • Go for removable bowls: removable stainless steel bowl – easy to clean
  • Keep water separate from food – many dogs drink less next to their food
  • Adjust the height as he grows – recheck every two months for a puppy
  • Put a mat underneath to catch spills

What height to set it at, and for which dogs

It makes sense for large dogs, older dogs, dogs with arthritis or recovering, and flat-faced breeds. For a young, small dog it brings nothing in particular.

In large deep-chested breeds, bear in mind that eating speed and exercise after meals matter more than height for the risk of gastric torsion. A slow feeder dog bowl may be even more useful.

A measurement to take yourself rather than trusting the stated sizes: measure from the floor to the bottom of the chest, with your dog standing and relaxed. Weight or breed charts are very rough, and five centimetres out is enough to cancel all the benefit.

FAQ

What height is right for my pet?

A raised bowl suits large dogs and older pets: it avoids straining the neck. For a cat or small dog, a bowl on the floor is more natural.

What are the exact dimensions?

14 × 9 cm. That's the measurement to check against your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows straight away in use.

Stainless steel or plastic?

Stainless steel holds neither smells nor bacteria and goes in the dishwasher. Plastic scratches over time, and the scratches trap residue — a known cause of chin acne in cats.

Is it non-slip?

Check the specifications for a rubberised base: without one, a light bowl moves at every meal and ends up under the furniture.
