Description
Dog nail clippers in stainless steel 402J2. Overlong nails hit the ground before the paw pad and push the foot out of line. The whole knack is stopping before the quick, which you can see through a pale nail or spot as a grey dot in the centre.

Dog nail clippers: trimming without cutting the quick

Overlong nails change a dog's posture: they touch the ground before the pad, the foot shifts out of line, and over time that affects the shoulders and back. The tell-tale sign is the clicking on tiled floors.

The hard part isn't cutting, it's stopping before the quick — the blood vessel that feeds the nail. A single cut that's too short can make a dog wary for years, and that's what guides our choice of nail clippers.

Scissors, guillotine or electric grinder: which to choose

This one is made of stainless steel 402J2. Ergonomic spring-loaded design with crescent blade, 11 x 7.6 cm — on a pale nail you can see the quick through it; on a black nail, trim in small cuts until a grey dot appears in the centre. A safety guard helps, and an electric nail grinder removes the risk altogether, though your dog will need to get used to the noise. Round it off with a Curved Stainless Steel Nail Clippers for Dogs and Cats for the paws.

  • Cut in thin slices on a black nail, stopping at the grey dot in the centre
  • Keep styptic powder within reach — a cut that's too short bleeds a lot
  • Hold the paw without pulling it backwards — that's the movement dogs refuse
  • Allow every three to four weeks, before the clicking starts
  • Don't forget the dewclaw: it never wears down on the ground and can curl into the flesh
  • Look after the blade: wipe with a dry cloth after use and store somewhere dry

How often to trim, and how not to put him off

Every three to four weeks is enough for most dogs; a dog that walks a lot on tarmac wears its nails down on its own, except the dewclaw. That dewclaw is exactly the one people forget, and it ends up curling round and growing into the flesh.

For a dog that refuses, do one nail a day, with a treat straight afterwards, without ever forcing. And use the moment to check the pads and the gaps between the toes: a dog brush run through at that moment is often enough to spot any irritation.

A useful anatomical guide: look at the nail from the side, not from the front. The quick follows the curve and always stops before the point where the nail starts to bend downwards. Cutting at that curve is safe on almost every dog.

FAQ

How often should I brush my pet?

Two to three times a week for a short coat, every day during moulting or for a long coat. Regular brushing prevents knots, which can't be untangled without cutting.

What are the exact dimensions?

11 x 7.6 cm. Check this measurement against your pet's size: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows the moment you use it.

Does it pull on the skin?

Not if you work in small sections, in the direction of the fur, holding the base of the tuft. The pain almost always comes from pulling from the tip.

What is it made of?

402J2 stainless steel. The material dictates the care, so check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
