Automatic dog feeder: regular meals while you're out

A feeder is first and foremost about keeping meal times regular when yours aren't. A dog fed at set times digests better, begs less and wakes up less at night – his feeding clock is very strong.

It also lets you split the daily portion, which matters for large deep-chested breeds. The technical points are jamming and power backup, and that's how we sort our automatic pet feeders.

Capacity, jamming and backup power: what to check

An airtight hopper stops the kibble going soft. To slow down eating, a 2-in-1 automatic pet feeder and water dispenser for dogs and cats is still more effective.

  • Check which kibble size it takes – that's the number one cause of jamming
  • Insist on backup batteries – a power cut shouldn't mean a missed meal
  • Split food into two or three portions, especially for large breeds
  • Test it for a few days while you're at home, before you go away
  • Keep a reserve within reach – an automatic dog feeder can jam without warning

Setting it up properly, and what it doesn't replace

Test it for several days while you're there: it's the only way to spot jamming or a timing glitch. Clean the hopper every week – kibble dust clumps together and ends up blocking the screw.

A feeder never replaces someone being there over several days: a dog left alone needs walks, not just food. And for a greedy eater, a slow feeder bowl is still an essential extra.

One setting that makes a big difference: schedule the last meal at least three hours before your bedtime. A dog fed late asks to go out at night, and the feeder then becomes the cause of the very problem it was meant to prevent.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Black and White all share the same dimensions and the same finish. It's purely a question of looks.

Will my cat accept it?

Cats accept what they discover on their own. Put the accessory in a room they use, without showing it to them, and give it two or three days before drawing any conclusions.

Is it suitable for an indoor cat?

That's actually its main use: an indoor cat spends most of the day alone, and boredom soon turns into scratched furniture or night-time wake-ups.
