The litter stays in the tray — edges and mat catch what he carries out on his paws

He goes inside it, not next to it — big enough for him to turn and dig without hitting an edge

The smell doesn't spread through the room — high sides and a closure that hold back splashes and dust

Cat litter tray: size and access come first

A cat that goes next to the tray is almost always saying the same thing: the tray is too small, too dirty, in the wrong place, or covered when it can't stand a lid. It's never toilet training gone wrong, and it's rarely a whim.

The size rule is simple: the tray should be one and a half times your cat's length, not counting the tail. Most trays on sale are too small for an adult cat, and that's the first filter we apply to our litter trays.

Open, covered or high-sided: which one for which cat

This one is made of tough PP plastic. High sides hold back litter kicked out by a cat that digs hard; a lid traps smells inside, which many cats refuse. See also: stainless steel litter tray with steps and high sides too.

  • Allow one and a half times your cat's length — this tray measures 49 × 34 × 18 cm
  • Have one more tray than you have cats – the rule applies from two cats
  • Go open if in doubt: a covered cat litter tray concentrates odours for your cat too
  • Choose high sides if yours digs hard and sends litter everywhere
  • Check for a low entry for a kitten or an older cat that can no longer step over
  • Place it away from the food bowl and out of the way — never in a hallway

How many trays, and where to put them

The rule is one tray per cat, plus one. With two cats, that makes three trays – it sounds like a lot, and it's what solves most toilet problems in multi-cat homes. Spread them across different rooms, not side by side.

An older or arthritic cat can no longer step over a high edge: cut a low entry or change model rather than scolding it. And the cat litter you choose matters just as much: granules that are too coarse put some cats off.

One sign never to ignore: a cat that steps into the tray, digs, squats and comes out with nothing to show – several times in a row. That's not a tray problem, it's a veterinary emergency in a male cat. A urinary blockage kills within forty-eight hours.

FAQ

How many litter trays for two cats?

The rule is one litter tray per cat, plus one. So two cats need three trays, spread around the home rather than lined up in the same spot.

What are the exact dimensions?

49 × 34 × 18 cm. Check this measurement against the space you have in mind before ordering: it's the one behind most returns when it's only read afterwards.

How do I clean it?

Scoop out waste every day and empty it completely once a week, using hot soapy water. Avoid bleach: its smell makes some cats mark their territory over it.

What is it made of?

Tough PP plastic. This composition determines the care it needs: see the specifications for the right washing method.
