But most of an infestation doesn't live on the dog: eggs and larvae are in carpets, skirting boards and bedding. Treating the animal alone is never enough, and that's the first thing to know before choosing from our flea collars.

Treat the dog, and above all the home

On the day you fit it, wash all bedding at sixty degrees and vacuum everywhere, skirting boards included, emptying the bag straight away. Without this step, larvae already present will keep hatching for weeks.

And remember the absolute rule: never a dog product on a cat. Many contain permethrin, which is deadly to cats, even through contact with a treated dog. To check for an infestation, one pass with dog cleaning wipes is enough.

A simple check before deciding a collar doesn't work: comb the dog over a white sheet and put the black specks on damp cotton wool. If they turn red, they're flea droppings — but they may date from before the collar went on. Allow three weeks before judging a treatment.

How do I measure neck size?

Use a tape measure around the base of the neck, where the collar naturally sits, leaving two fingers of slack. That's the measurement that counts, not your pet's weight.
