Dog lick mat for anxious dogs or fast eaters

Licking is a calming behaviour in dogs: it releases endorphins and lowers the heart rate. That's why a lick mat settles a dog before you leave, during a thunderstorm or after a vet visit, where a toy would only wind them up more.

It also slows down wet meals dramatically: wet food that vanished in twenty seconds now takes ten minutes. The pattern depth is what makes the difference, and it's how we choose our dog lick mat.

Pattern, suction cups and washing: what really matters

This one is made of food-grade silicone. Round, textured pattern, Ø 16.5 cm × H 6.2 cm — deep grooves keep a dog busy far longer than decorative ones, and strong suction cups stop your dog pushing the mat all round the room. Food-grade silicone can go in the freezer, which triples how long it keeps them busy. For a dog that would rather search than lick, a multi-use dog lick mat with silicone bowls will suit better.

Spread it with wet food, plain yoghurt or vegetable purée — never anything sugary
Put it in the freezer an hour beforehand — it keeps them busy three times longer
Check the suction cups — a dog lick mat that slides around ends up upside down
Wash it after every use: hand or dishwasher washable
Use it before you go out or during a thunderstorm — licking lowers the heart rate
Go for deep grooves — this one measures Ø 16.5 cm × H 6.2 cm

What to put on it, and for how long

Wet food, plain yoghurt, vegetable purée or soft cheese all work; anything sugary, chocolate and anything containing xylitol are strictly off-limits. Count whatever you spread as part of the daily ration, or the weight soon piles on.

Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty: beyond that, your dog is just licking an empty mat out of habit. Put it away after use so it keeps its effect. If the aim is more to keep a bored dog busy for a long time, a snuffle mat tires them out more.

An often-overlooked use: a lick mat makes grooming possible for a dog who hates it. Stuck to the bath or the wall and spread with wet food, it keeps your dog busy while you rinse them or clip their nails. It's often the only way to avoid having to hold them down.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying before reuse. Avoid very hot water, which warps plastics and slackens straps.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Red, Blue, Grey, Purple, Pink and Orange share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.

Is it suitable for all dog sizes?

Go by the dimensions in the specifications rather than the size label: between a beagle and a German shepherd, the weight is sometimes similar, the build never.

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.
