Cat bowl in plastic and stainless steel. Wide and shallow, so the whiskers never touch the sides — constant contact explains most cats that leave the bottom of the bowl or scoop their food out with a paw.

Cat bowls: depth matters more than anything else

A cat whose whiskers rub the sides while eating ends up leaving food at the bottom, or scooping it out with a paw. It isn't fussiness: whiskers are highly sensitive sensors, and constant contact is unpleasant.

A wide, shallow bowl fixes that in one go. Material comes next: plastic scratches and harbours bacteria, a common cause of chin acne. That's how we sort our cat bowls.

Ceramic, stainless steel or plastic: what really changes

This one is made of plastic and stainless steel. Rounded with a 15° tilt and decorative cat ears, 16.5 × 13.5 cm — go wide and shallow, so the whiskers never touch the edges. Ceramic and stainless steel really come clean, unlike scratched plastic. A raised ceramic mushroom cat bowl – 300ml on a raised stand is a good addition for a cat that brings food back up after meals.

  • Choose wide and shallow — the whiskers shouldn't touch the edges
  • Go for ceramic or stainless steel — scratched plastic harbours bacteria
  • Check the capacity — this bowl measures 16.5 × 13.5 cm
  • Keep water separate from food, and place them well apart
  • Wash it every day: hand wash or dishwasher, removing the metal part first
  • Keep it away from the litter tray — no cat accepts both in the same corner

Where to put it, and why to keep water apart

Most cats drink little and don't like drinking next to their food: it's a cleanliness instinct, since water near a carcass is suspect. Put the water in another room and you'll see them drink more.

Keep everything away from the litter tray, without exception. And if your cat brings up its biscuits right after eating, it's the height you need to look at: a cat bowl stand often solves the problem without changing anything else.

A very simple test to tell whether the bowl is too deep: watch whether your cat scoops the biscuits out with its paw to eat them off the floor. This behaviour, often mistaken for a whim, almost always means the whiskers are touching the edges.

FAQ

What height is right for my pet?

A raised bowl suits large dogs and older pets: it avoids straining the neck. For a cat or small dog, a bowl on the floor is more natural.

What are the exact dimensions?

16.5 × 13.5 cm. Check this measurement against your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows straight away in use.

Stainless steel or plastic?

Stainless steel holds neither smells nor bacteria and goes in the dishwasher. Plastic scratches over time, and the scratches trap residue — a known cause of chin acne in cats.

Is it non-slip?

Check the specifications for a rubberised base: without one, a light bowl moves at every meal and ends up under the furniture.
