Cat feeding mat for cats that drag food out of the bowl

Lots of cats pull their biscuits out of the bowl to eat them beside it, and spill some of their water when drinking. On wooden floors, standing water ends up leaving marks; on tiles, everything ends up sticky.

A feeding mat catches both and rinses clean in seconds. The raised edge and the grip underneath make all the difference, and that's what we look at in our cat feeding mats.

Edge, grip and material: what keeps it all in place

This one is made of silicone. Stylised cat shape, available in several animal designs, 59 × 37.5 cm — the surface should reach well beyond the bowls, spills included. Silicone grips a smooth floor better than rigid PVC, and a raised edge holds the water in instead of letting it run. The cat-shaped silicone bowl mat placed on it shouldn't slide.

  • Choose a surface that reaches well beyond the bowls — this mat measures 59 × 37.5 cm
  • Check for a raised edge — without it, water simply runs over the top
  • Check the grip — a cat feeding mat that slides just follows the bowl
  • Rinse it every day: wipe gently with a dry cloth. Avoid water
  • Lift it once a week to dry underneath
  • Place it out of the way and far from the litter tray

Looking after it, and where to put it

A daily rinse is enough, but remember to lift the mat once a week: moisture trapped underneath marks the floor exactly like the spilt water you wanted to avoid.

Place it out of the way and far from the litter tray. And if your cat always drags its biscuits out, the mat won't fix the cause: it's the bowls that are too deep.

An observation that helps you choose: if your cat eats off the floor fifty centimetres from the bowl, a small mat won't be enough. Measure the actual area where you find biscuits before ordering — it's almost always wider than you'd think.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

What is it made of?

Silicone. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.
