Less pulling from the very first walk — the chest attachment turns them towards you instead of letting them lean in with all their weight

He can't back out of it — straps adjust at several points: the harness fits his shape, not a standard size

Walks become bearable again for you both — you guide instead of holding back, and your arm stops being yanked at every swerve

Padded nylon, adjustable straps — product material

Description
Small dog harness in padded nylon + adjustable straps. In small breeds, pulling on a collar causes tracheal collapse: a harness moves the pressure onto the chest and keeps the windpipe out of it.

Small dog harness: protecting a fragile windpipe

On a Chihuahua, a Yorkshire Terrier or a Spitz, a collar isn't an option: these breeds have a fragile windpipe, and repeated pulling causes tracheal collapse. The typical dry cough on walks is a warning sign you should never ignore.

A harness spreads the pull across the chest and keeps the windpipe out of it. All that's left is to choose one light enough not to hamper a small stride, and that's how we pick our small dog harnesses.

H-style, vest or Y-shape: which one for which size

This one is made of padded nylon + adjustable straps. A vest style spreads the load better on a very slim dog, a Y-shape leaves the shoulder freer. Weight matters: beyond a certain point, a small dog shortens its stride. Add a Adjustable No-Pull Y Dog Harness that's light: heavy clips throw them off balance.

  • Switch to a harness at the first sign of coughing on the lead: that's the windpipe talking
  • Go light: a small dog harness that's too stiff shortens the stride
  • Adjust to a two-finger gap and check again after three walks
  • Check the armpit: it's the first place to redden on a slim dog
  • Look after the straps: hand wash in lukewarm water, air dry
  • Choose a light lead: the weight of the clip counts on a three-kilo dog

Fitting a harness on a very small dog

On a very small dog, the fit comes down to a single notch. Too loose and the harness twists and the dog backs out of it; too tight and it marks the skin under the armpit within three walks. Two fingers everywhere, and a visual check after the first week.

Keep the collar for the ID tag and the harness for the lead: the two don't compete. And avoid retractable leads, whose sudden snap-back cancels out the whole point of the harness — a light dog lead with a fixed length is much safer.

A sign to know: a dry, short, repeated cough that comes on during walks and stops when you stand still. It isn't excitement — very often it's early tracheal collapse. Switch to a harness straight away, and see a vet.

FAQ

Can it be left on all day?

No, like any harness. Put it on for walks and take it off when you get home: worn non-stop, it ends up rubbing under the front legs.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S, M, L and XL. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than weight: two animals of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, go for the larger one.

How does a no-pull harness work?

The attachment point is on the chest, not the back. When your dog pulls, the tension turns it towards you instead of helping it forward: it loses its leverage and turns round naturally. No pain is involved.

What is it made of?

Padded nylon + adjustable straps. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
