He goes in by himself — a wide enough opening: one that's too narrow stays empty for months

He sleeps warm with nothing on his back — an enclosed space holds its own warmth: that's how a burrow works

A place nobody follows them — a single entrance is enough to feel out of reach

Cardboard cat house: why cardboard works so well

There's a reason a cat prefers the box a parcel came in to an expensive bed: cardboard insulates, absorbs noise, holds in its scent and hides it completely. That's exactly the combination a cat looks for to sleep.

A cardboard house offers all of that with a stable shape and an entrance sized for your cat. It also has the advantage of being scratchable without harm. That leaves thickness, which decides how long it lasts — and that's the key criterion for our cardboard cat houses.

Thickness, assembly and scratching: what lasts a few months

This one is made of strong kraft cardboard. Cube with several openings and a flat roof, 32 x 32 cm — double-wall corrugated cardboard lasts several months, where single-wall sags within a few weeks. Check the size of the entrance: a cat must be able to walk in without ducking, or it won't go in. For lasting outdoor use, a two-level upright scratcher house for large cats will be a better fit.

  • Choose double-wall corrugated cardboard — single-wall sags within a few weeks
  • Check the size of the entrance — this model measures 32 x 32 cm
  • Put it against a wall, with its back to the room, never in the middle of the living room
  • Let your cat scratch it — that's what it's for, not damage
  • Pop a familiar blanket inside and your cat will adopt its cardboard house within a day
  • Keep it dry: dust dry or use a slightly damp cloth

Where to put it, and when to replace it

Against a wall, in a corner, away from foot traffic: that's where a hideaway gets used. A house placed in the middle of a room loses its whole point — the idea is precisely not to be exposed.

Cardboard doesn't like damp: it's an indoor item, not one for the patio. Replace it when the roof sags or it has picked up a smell. For an outdoor shelter that lasts, an outdoor cat house with insulation is a must.

An often-overlooked use: a cardboard house is the best welcome tool for a cat arriving in a new home. It immediately gives it a retreat where it can't be seen, which dramatically shortens the phase spent hiding under furniture. Very often, three days instead of two weeks.

FAQ

Will my cat really use it?

It will if it's in the right spot: cats scratch when they wake from a nap and near walkways. Put it next to their bed or the living room door, not in an unused corner.

What is it made of?

Tough kraft cardboard. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Can the sisal be replaced?

On post models, yes: the rope can be wound back around the post. On cardboard scratchers, the pad flips over once worn, which doubles its lifespan.

Will it stop my cat scratching the sofa?

In most cases, as long as you place the scratcher near the scratched area and make the sofa less tempting for the first few days. A scratcher at the other end of the room changes nothing.
